Help on old sword

My father had the sword and I know nothing about it, only stamp I find is on the tang is a number 8 , any help would appreciated

I’m no expert, but that looks like the styling of a civil war era cavalry saber. The only thing throwing it off is the metal going up the entire length of the handle.
