I was in Reno, NV for 10 straight days last summer. I stayed at the Peppermill and the Nugget during my trip. I hated Reno. The Peppermill was the nicest place I visited, but it was like a retirement home there. Of course you can also stay in Lake Tahoe and that would be much better. I only got to spend one day in Lake Tahoe though.
Reno is very dirty once you venture out of the casinos...
Go to Tahoe, beautiful place
X10 We went a couple of years ago. Flew in to Reno, rented a car and went to Tahoe. Had a great time, came back to Reno for a couple of days. The casinoes were nice but that was it. Should have just stayed in Tahoe.
Go to south Lake Tahoe, no question. You should also arrange a boat trip of Lake Tahoe if possible that will take you into Emerald Bay. A sight you won't forget. Harrah's great choice. Also if you need to strech your legs, go hike some of the trails in one of the many state parks. Some beautiful mountain lakes not far from many of the parking lots. If your wife likes Xmas stuff, take some big bags with you on the walk and find the huge pine cones (some almost the size of a football) and ship them back to your home. If you could buy them in TX they would charge $5 to $10 each and they create great memories of trip. My wife brings hers out every Xmas.
Reno's a very poor-man's version of Las Vegas. I live 5 hours west, and the few times I've been there (Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation convention) I've not been impressed at all. Lake Tahoe on the Nevada side has casinos, and if you've never seen Lake Tahoe you'll be in awe at the beauty of such a big, crystal clear lake.
If you want to come west, fly into LA and drive Pacific Coast Highway northbound in a nice small rental, stop in Santa Barbara (beautiful), Shell Beach (you can rent and ATV and ride around the state beach which has dunes open to 4wd), San Simeon (Heart Castle), Big Sur, Carmel/Monterey (Pebble Beach, 17 miles drive, aquarium), Big Basin SP (big redwoods) and then out of SJ or SFO.
Two hour drive WEST of Reno...go white water rafting! That was the BOMB!!! Stay in Reno if you can afford it....much better for "mood setting." Definitely the prettiest place on the planet (that I've seen anyway).
