We took the boys and some of their friends to Barefoot on the Colorado in Bend over the weekend. The oldest turned 14 and wanted to go camping. I figured we'd set some single hook droplines out, and the stars couldn't have aligned any better for fishing. The river came up Friday from rains out west which got the fish moving up the river. After getting camp set up mid-day Saturday, I had the boys help sein bait. Small shad and minnows were about all we could catch, but it's what was in the river so it's what the fish were feeding on. I'd say we did okay for only having 11 hooks out. Biggest yellow cat was upper 20s, close to 30 lbs. The next one was 10-12 pounds and caught on rod and reel by one of the boys. Ended up with 11 fish total.
None of these boys had ever set drop lines, seined bait or caught a yellow cat before. Most didn't even know what a yellow cat was. We waded to set the lines and some parts were too swift or deep for them. This was the case where the biggest fish was caught. The look on their faces from across the river when that fish blew up as I was pulling up the line was priceless. I think they might be hooked. This will be a weekend most of the boys will never forget.
