Just put in a trough for my deer, used and old 9ft diameter concrete trough that’s probably close to 70 years old, buried it in the ground to help keep the water cooler during the summer months. I used a Hudson type float valve, have had really good luck with these, also ran 700 ft of the poly gas line plastic pipe underground, it comes in 500ft rolls and it’s a lot cheaper than pvc and 4 times as strong. Used an adapter to come up out of ground to pvc at the trough.

Funny. I spent all morning working on mine.
I like the yellow floats on the string plumbed from underneath.
Those valves do have to be cleaned occasionally, but really safe from breakage in the bottom/ middle of the trough
for exposed pipe I cage them with pieces of cattle panel and posts.
my cows love to rub.

I use the trough o matics. But I modify the clamps (cut and weld) to allow clamping to the width of the concrete trough. I put a faucet on the riser pipe and go from it to the float with a short length of garden hose.
I just believe that this gives you flexibility and prevents breakage if/when cattle manage to jostle it around.
