Kind of like corn prices in deer season. Haha!

I think last time I bought shrimp was $22 per quart.

A cast net, a perch trap and some crab traps make my bait a bit of a chore sometimes but it works.

I’ll cast net finger mullet and mud minnows for all sorts methods: Popping cork, free lining, sight casting, soaking a few, or dragging bottom for flounder. I have even cast netted shrimp before and free lined them under green lights to catch trout.

Cast net big mullet for cut bait for redfish

Perch traps for all the above or fishing for trout with a shaker weight m(instead of croaker)

Crab traps: to catch crab for use at the jetties for catching drum, bull reds and even sharks

My point: if bait prices irk you, investing in a cast net and learning how to throw it and where to find bait at is super beneficial and lucrative.

Gordon’s Bait & Tackle in Brownsville has gone through one expansion after another over the years, following a family tradition that has converted the business into more than just a place for anglers to buy supplies before they head on fishing trips to the bay, area canals and the beach. The family owned and operated business on Highway 48, also known as Padre Island Highway, is a one-stop shop selling…Read More

Finger mullet and croaker are $10-12/doz around here.

I get buying shrimp bc if I ever cast netted 20-21 counts we’re switching gears and shrimping.

Mullet are a dime a dozen where I go with said cast net and rather have piggy perch over croaks any day

Do you pay cash or finance all that? Skrimps included.

I can remember when we would buy shrimp at the little bait stand in Fulton in front of Oak Shores motel for a penny each. We would count everyone one to make sure we weren't getting cheated out of a couple of cents.

Paid cash for everything but the shrimp. Financed those

It’s just like the auto business now. You can finance a quart for up to 18 months at a low interest rate WAC and they will buy your dead un-used shrimp back for $1.00 a lb. and sell you fresh dead shrimp for $4.00 a lb. 👍👍

Ive compensated by just downgrading my standards. Croakers, sand trout and gaftops go in the cooler now as well.

I’m sure you could, just never tried as the cast net is faster and I don’t live right on saltwater.

I’d love them to make croakers game fish and hope the croaker runs would come back. Better eating then trout imo.

Limit shrimping boats and croakers would come back faster.
