    Best way to restart grass

So i have saint augustine around my house... kinda. Anyways i moved here less that 2 years ago and redid my sprinkler system that had alot of issues. Anyways now i want my yard to look better.

My back yard for example is probably 30% saint augustine and the rest various weeds and other stuff. It looks bad. If i wanted to put st augustine in the remainder of the yard how should i how about it? Round up? Then rough the ground up.. i have no clue how to do it but want to prep it right. Anything i should think about before doing this?

Rent a sod cutter, cut out the stuff you want gone and lay new sod in those areas.

Few Questions? How big is your yard? Also do you want 100% weed free? Some people are ok with common Bermuda mixed in with their St Augustine. To me common Bermuda is the enemy. Few pics wouldn’t hurt either

I bought St Augustine sod and cut it into 4" plugs, killed everything in the yard with roundup, tilled in some good topsoil and checkerboarded the plugs 24" apart. Took 2 years but it's so thick now that it chokes out any other grass or weeds. I put down some weed and feed twice a year and give it just enough water to keep it from going dormant in the heat of the Summer.

Agree. Especially if you want instant gratification. Sod cutter is not hard to operate if you don't mind DIY. Rent a roller too from home depot to even out the seams and fill any small gaps with sand to keep edges from drying out.

              Pray for more rain too!

I would love a weed free lawn ideally, but i for the most part want a lawn this looks good, that i dont mind watering for no reason. Haha My first goal would be the back yard. The area i want grass would be about 3500 sq feet so

I will have to look into a sod cutter. Never heard of it

Use a tiller on the bare spots to bust up the ground a bit and get the weeds/grass out. I’d probably go 4” deep or so. Even the dirt out to avoid any holes/mounds, grade it the way you want, get it a little wet and lay some sod. Control the future weeds by mowing often and a good preemergent like prodiamine.

You’ve got a crap load of common Bermuda in your yard, also lots of seed so would be really hard to control even if you laid out new sod. You can go about this 2 ways, first kill out all the grass with roundup and a heavy shot of pre-emergent, do this the first application. Then every 2 weeks for a couple months spray roundup only to kill the few weeds a Bermuda that pops up. Also with a bare dirt yard after rains you’ll see where all the low areas are and you can fill with dirt to get level. Need good drainage for st Augustine to survive or it will die out in the low areas and be solid weeds again. The 2nd way to go about this would be to plant round up ready st Augustine that’s called Provista which is very similar and you would only need to mow 4-5 times a year because it grows slowly. Would take 8 pallets to cover 3,500sq ft.

I’ve got 4 acres of st Augustine grass that I planted in 2006 and still have spots of common Bermuda that I spot spray when I see it, it’s a on going battle.
