    Son's Bow Question

My 11 year old son is wanting to shoot a Ram with his bow this year when we go to Thompson's in July. We have been several times before and he has shot three in the past with his rifle. He wants to be like me and get it done with a bow, but I'm not totally sure he is ready.

His current bow set up is a Diamond Infitate Edge Pro. We reset the draw length and weight last night, so he is currently pulling 24" and 42 lbs. Watching him draw yesterday I think his draw length can be a little longer and he could probably pull a little bit more weight but want to get him back in the grove of shooting everyday before I bump up his weight some more, for fear of him developing bad habits.

He was shooting Blackout 500 spline arrows at 25" long. I believe these are getting too short. I have some Cabela's Stalker 500 spline arrows at 27-1/2" long he can use as well.

So my question is do you think that his bow set up will be sufficient enough to kill a ram?
If so, any recommendations on broadheads?
If not, what point would he need to be?

Sorry for the long read but just looking for confirmation.

My dad didn't let me bow hunt until I could put 3 consecutive arrows in a small matchbox it made me put in the work and effort to know what the goal was to make a successful kill with a bow without wounding it due to a wild shot from just going out unprepared.

Cut on contact head--no mechanicals. And be sure he knows what his max shooting range is.

I think your missing some pertinent info such as:
        Overall arrow weight
        Arrow speed
        Momentum

        Good job being diligent MrRing.

That’s plenty. Shoot something like a slick trick original or a cut on contact. Both my kids killed deer and hogs with similar setups.

This right here. It doesn't HAVE to be cut on contact but I wouldn't have him shooting something like a muzzy or similar with the huge tip on it.

              Son's Bow Question

If he can put the arrow in the right place, he can kill a ram with that setup! I’ve killed a bunch of critters with a 42# longbow!!!!

Get his arrow weight up at 10gpp or more, and use a cut on contact broadhead like a Magnus Stinger or Iron Will.

My oldest son shot a ram about the same age, same bow and similar setup. I think he used a Magnus Stinger if I remember correctly. I would keep the shots to 20 yards and in and go after them!

Get his draw length correct then it will be enough.

That is plenty. My wife has a similar draw length and shoots 37 pounds. She has killed several mature whitetail bucks and pigs up to 150 lbs. I would use a Magnus stinger, helix, silver flame(the cheaper red ones), etc.

Magnus Buzzcut. My buddies wife killed a 200 plus lb boar with 38 lbs and broadhead stopped in opposite shoulder. Accuracy is key.

Thank you all for the comments and help. Today we decided that the 24" draw length is good, then did some playing around with the arrows.

Current arrows weigh 306 gr and shoot 196 fps with an 85 gr field tips.

Same arrows weigh 321 gr and 191 fps with 100 gr field tips.

With this data I am going to have him stay with the 100 gr tips.

With that light of draw weight, a heavier total arrow weight would be very beneficial.

Those bows come out of tune about every 20 shots. Get it checked.
