My wife gave me a axis hunt for our 4th anniversary and my 40th birthday May 2022.
The hunt was on a small ranch in Fredericksburg called Itz Ranch. Now nothing fancy. They do have blinds and feeders and a small 2 bed 1 bath cabin to stay in. We ended up sitting in the brush and did a drive on the first evening hunt. He told me I didn’t have to shoot the first one. I told him I wasn’t here to play around. So we sat in the brush for about 45 minutes when we could hear them coming off the hill. Well in the middle of the herd was this toad. My first axis and the hunt lasted 45 minutes. The was just shy of 100 yard and I put a 265 grain bullet from a 444 in the center of his throat patch and it was over.
My first axis @ 34” full velvet. It’s a dream come true.
Did get to guide my guide in a Turkey hunt the next morning where he shot his first Turkey.
Good times and just minutes from wine country.
The Itz family are some of the nicest down to earth people I have ever meet. Great conversation and just a great time all around.
God sure does make some beautiful animals.
