Chicken coop ideas

Been keeping chickens for several years.
Things i have learned.

Chickens poop a lot at night.
Plan on a way to get rid of the poop under where they roost.

Chickens roost high. Put the roost higher that the laying boxes.
Otherwise they will roost in the laying boxes.
See above, "chickens poop a lot at night."

Every other animal likes a chicken dinner.
If you raise chickens, you need to keep a few traps set at all times around your chicken pens.

Regular chicken wire will keep chickens in, but will not keep a determined varmint out.

If you are just raising a few, it is not worth it to buy chicks and devote you time and effort to get them to laying age, you will be better off to buy 4-6 month old pullets.

Chickens will eat anything and like it and prosper, all table scraps of any type go to the chickens to save on feed.

One tip on the roost too... Whatever you use make it round and make it small enough that the chickens can wrap their toes/feet around it. IF you use something like a 2 X 4, rip it if possible to a 2 X 2. If you can't at least turn the edge up so they can grip it. Best roost material I ever used is those wooden dowels that are used for clothes racks/rods in closets. They're cheap too.


When a chicken squats on the roost, their toes draw up and hold them to the roost. In the morning or if they move at night, they must first stand up to release their feet from the roost... Same for turkeys in the wild. They clamp to the tree limbs where they roost same way.

Depending on how big you want. I have had one of these in my back yard for 5 years now and its just as good now as it was when I bought it.

this is the one that I have but I have expanded it and its perfect.

IF you just do it with the ground under it. and do not move it. Like me. Once every few years. move it. till up the soil and add sand.
Put it back and move on.

If you let them go in your back yard. Be ready for them to ruin all your flower beds. they will scratch all of the mulch out and poop ever where they walk.

Built mine two years ago. No run. And they stay in protective jail 24/7. Hawks and foxes near wiped me out when I used to let them out.

Yep, even with the chain link kennel fencing for the pen, I had to put a top on it to keep varmints and hawks out... At first, we were losing a chicken per day. Haven't lost a bird since installing the top.

We lost most of our chickens to bobcats last year, we have a 12X16 hen house and they had a 30X40 around it with netting to keep the hawks out. Never had a problem for 30 years so we decided to move our 3 hens and rooster in the hen house and build a run. I’ve got a 12X16 run framed out and will use the 16’ horse panels to enclose it and make it bobcat/coyote/hawk proof. Thank goodness, I have enough panels to do the whole run, they are expensive now. I’ll take some pics as it progresses and post the final product.
