One tip on the roost too... Whatever you use make it round and make it small enough that the chickens can wrap their toes/feet around it. IF you use something like a 2 X 4, rip it if possible to a 2 X 2. If you can't at least turn the edge up so they can grip it. Best roost material I ever used is those wooden dowels that are used for clothes racks/rods in closets. They're cheap too.
When a chicken squats on the roost, their toes draw up and hold them to the roost. In the morning or if they move at night, they must first stand up to release their feet from the roost... Same for turkeys in the wild. They clamp to the tree limbs where they roost same way.
