    St Augustine sod care

I can’t remember who our resident turf expert is. He helped me with my Bermuda immensely. Bought a new house. St Augustine which I’ve never had. Starting over. Yay

Sod was laid down within the last 6 weeks. I have irrigation. Too soon to fertilize? Need to know what’s best for it. House is in Brenham.

I’m no expert but have laid a lot of it. As long as it’s greened back up and free of stress from planting I see no problem at all as long as you water it in good. It’s getting warm now and you don’t want your fertilizer laying on top of the grass burning it.

      Skip first season of fertilizing

        Ok.

Irrigation ran for 5 minutes a day every day till this week. Cut back to every other day.

Let's see what I remember from ole Randy Lemon (may he RIP)

          1. Water in the early morning and not evening to prevent mold.

          2. Mow on top setting.
(a thicker lawn is a healthier lawn and will supposedly choke out the weeds)

          3. Don't use weed and feed, get on his feralization schedule.

I'm too lazy so I use weed and feed.
This year all I seem to have done is feed the weeds.

One good soaking is better than frequent half soaking.

I’d give it some milorganite fert. Mow on highest setting with mower. No pre emergent this year. Slowly back off watering everyday and water deeper when the grass shows sign of needing it to promote deep roots.

You can check to see if it’s rooting by pulling up corners of sod, if it’s still green and it’s been 6 weeks I imagine root production is going well

St Augustine is awesome but she's a fickle and high maintenance B!

I think you still want to winterize this fall !
Keeps from losing much over winter, kinda like putting it to sleep to hibernate properly.

I watered mine for 30 mins a day for 2 weeks, now treat it like the rest of the yard

Roots seem to have taken pretty well. Have some soft spots so I cut back. I’ll extend run times and cut back on days next month I figure.

I use Medina Growin’ Green organic fertilizer, put it on now, unlike the chemical ones, it won’t burn the grass, even if put on heavy and don’t water it in right away

Throw down some milorganite. Set empty tuna cans in the yard, use it to measure how much water you are putting down. I aim for 1/2” in the early mornings and adjust my frequency based on heat and how much water the grass needs. Less frequent but deeper watering will get you deeper roots. Mow on your highest setting, and mow often. Follow the 1/3 rule, you don’t want to be cutting more than 1/3 of the blades when you mow.

Something like RGS to pump up that rooting would be good too.

Once it looks well established and happy happy, hit it with some higher nitrogen fertilizer and watch it take off.

My st aug was doing great before winter. The freeze/ice really hurt A LOT of st aug lawns. My dads down in Houston didn’t get hurt much at all, but in Twmple mine looked pathetic. I cut it short, too dressed with compost/sand and have been tenderly tending to it. She is coming back and these warm temps should help. I just put down some flagship tonight. If we get a reprieve from the forecasted rain I will be treating some weeds I have popping up. Come fall, hit it with a preemergent, and the same thing in the spring when soil temps get to I think 55* is the magic number.

If it’s new Sod it’s probably had a ton of N this spring before it was harvested, wouldn’t hurt to put out some P&K on it. If it’s rooted nicely I would just water 1 time per week now probably 3/4 inch of water. P&K will help it this summer from trying to burn up so fast also and keep it healthy and green without a whole lot of water. Pre-Emergent in February and again in October is all you need to do.
