Like others, I've pondered this question too. But my answer always comes down to one date: July 30, 1998. I would never go back to a time before that.
That was the day my daughter was born. I would never want to change anything before that time and possibly mess up the beginning of what is the best thing to ever happen to me in my life. That little girl changed me!

Voting to leave a union only causes war if somebody takes up arms to "preserve" the union. Not saying anything at all about slavery, but if folks vote to be out, they should be out. In that regard, I put the Civil War on Lincoln, as commander in chief of the US army.

Most of the south seceded before he even took office. And then he (along with the legislature) even passed an amendment protecting slavery in the South. Can you imagine if it had been ratified? Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying the civil war was over slavery. It was only over slavery to the extent that slavery was a conduit for power.
