If it can be done from home, AI will will relieve most of it from the need of a human.

I worked from home for 2 years. I've been back for almost a year now. I hated working from home. IMO, most of the people that say they are more productive at home, are lying to themselves. I know that since Covid, our departments production has seemed to go down hill.

While my work can be done remotely, AI cannot replace what I do.

I never stopped going to the office. My wife has been working from home since 3/20 but they are asking them to come in 2 days a week now.

AI is years and years away from doing anything other than looking cool at a specific task.

I'm not in the least bit worried that a computer can replace me in my life time or even my children's lifetime.

I did not like working from home and came back as soon as I could. I am more productive in the office and can stay focused. Kids at home did not help. Also, it is easier to leave work at work most of the time.
Now I do have two guys that excel at working from home and are more productive. Just depends on the person and the role.

I can see how your admin folks might work from home but I'm not sure I understand how other functions can be performed remotely (dental hygienists?). Are you finding that most of them are leaving the field and working other jobs from home?

I work at a smallish EPC firm and we have too much internal coordination required to allow full work from home options. We tried a work from home 2x a week scenario but productivity plummeted and schedules were slipping to a point of no float so we abandoned it. We had people creating meetings with themselves or going to doctor's appointments, etc. It was a management nightmare. I will say that some specific people in certain roles are allowed to work from home but those are typically A players that actually work from home.

As a PM I prefer to have the ability to go to someone's office to get a clear answer for a simple question in minutes. Playing phone tag and waiting for people to call me back on simple things can shift a schedule by days after reorganization of resources and workflows. Unnecessary frustration between team members was really becoming an issue.

I have been remote since March 2020, but Hybrid for years before and I am more productive at home. More production, meaning less 1 off meetings for no reason, can stay focused better and I can keep more current with the personal side as well, ie. I help out more.

Also would agree remote is the future, MikeD is correct the job candidate market got a whole LOT bigger as the global market grows and a lot cheaper, till they figure it out. Since 2016 I have been in the global market, I was competing with the Global for my jobs. It was mostly US companies but 99% of the people I worked with in those companies, were outside of the US. India, Argentina, Asia etc.

Now is remote work for most, no, they don't have the focus or the drive to do it, but for some of us, its all we will do going forward. Is it easier to find a low producer working remote, Dang Skippy, its blatantly obvious but mgmt is usually doing it as well so nothing gets done about.

I believe some of the IT outsourcing to India began in the 80's. HP did it with testing software back then and started doing customer service back then also.

I'm permanent remote. Everyday I'm on calls with people in India, Pakistan, London, Canada, NY, and CO. Wouldn't matter if I was in the office or not we still need a teams meeting.

What is work from home? I'm sure most folks want to work from home due to the "increased productivity" on behalf of their employer. Right.

My company went from everyday in-person, to full remote during the COVID fiasco and then transitioned to a hybrid in-person/remote schedule.

To be honest, I really like the hybrid schedule. As others have mentioned, sometimes being remote can be more productive, not to mention, you can avoid a commute, save on gas and not have to get all dressed up for work. However, on the flip side, productivity is not better for all and there is a certain amount of social interaction that also can promote productivity, company culture, etc.

I think a healthy mix of both remote and in-person is a good solution. It's nice to have the flexibility to work remote, but also to be able to meet with people in person.

We failed miserably at WFH since ownership fought it tooth and nail but that's a whole nutha discussion. Realistically i'd say 1/2 of our staff could do some variant of WFH and the other half is hands on. I haven't ever stopped coming in. The first few weeks were fun with zero traffic.
