    Selling rifle online...school me

I am considering selling a rifle but don't know all the ins and outs. So far I have learned that a bill of sale with a copy of the persons drivers license is ideal. Do I need a FFL dealer? What else do I need to do?

If curios minds want to know its a Springfield Armory M1A (.308) with a 4x14X56 First Generation Springfield scope. It has not been used in several years and has less than a 80 rounds through it.

Selling Long guns within TX you do not need an FFL or any paperwork at all.
If it makes you feel better, you can do a bill of sale.
You can also ship directly to someone's door in TX. (UPS has been good for this)

All this is providing you are not selling to a "prohibited person" which the average joe doesn't have much of a way to verify. Some will only sell to people that have a valid handgun license for this reason

In state you give the gun. They give the cash. Make sure they are a Texas resident. Screw a bill of sale. I don’t give out my personal info. I’ll show my chl. No pics. No info transfer. I don’t trust people. And the bill of sale isn’t worth the paper it’s wrote on. I’ve walked away from several deals on stubborn sellers demanding my personal info.

You can go through an ffl. But not required to in state.

“Are you a texas resident and can you legally own a firearm?” They say yes to both then you’re good. Easy as that. You can ship it to their house as well. In state only. Out of state needs to go to an ffl.

          Bingo^^^

I’ve never asked for or been asked for a bill of sale or any kind of license when selling or purchasing a firearm in a personal sale. It’s not required and it does absolutely nothing.

I read where neither UPS or FedEx will no longer ship firearms except from FFL to FFL, but I haven’t tried to ship one lately so don’t know for sure. I’m sure of this; if you don’t declare it as a firearm and it’s lost or stolen, you will be SOL.

Don't tell UPS you're shipping a gun, they won't ship it.

In Texas selling from resident to resident you don't need any paperwork. You can legally just exchange gun for cash IF you have no reason to believe the buyer can't legally buy it. Lot's of people ask to see an ID and do a bill of sale which in this day and age is probably a good idea. Some buyers will argue they don't want to and the paper means nothing. Myself I like to have some record that I sold it in the off chance something happens.

UPS and FedEx policies no longer let an individual who is not an FFL holder ship a gun of any kind. The last time I shipped one it was using a return label to the manufacturer so it went through the system as if the manufacturer (an FFL) was shipping it to themselves (an FFL.) If you mention a gun like they require, they are going to ask to see the paperwork. If you don't mention a gun and it gets stolen or damaged, you are SOL. Best bet is meet face to face or go FFL to FFL. Both have their inconveniences but are much easier than shipping nowadays.

"UPS Store" wont ship because they are not actually UPS and make their own rules. They are just a franchise type store.

You have to go to a Real "UPS Customer Center" and they will ship no problem. Tell them what it is (Rifle or Shotgun) and insure it for the proper amount. As long as there is no ammo in the box, you are good.
Never lie about shipping a gun, you are SOL if its lost/stolen

Dave, that used to be the case until August 2022.

From the UPS site. "Shipments containing Firearm Products are accepted for transportation only from shippers who are federally licensed and have an approved UPS agreement for the transportation of Firearm Products."

The "agreement" thing is how I was able to ship back to a manufacturer using FedEx. Their policy is similar to UPS. Not trying to be argumentative, just wanted to give folks a heads up.

This. Anyone asking for pics of DL or any personal info for a (bill of sale) can kick rocks.

Is there a link for this UPS agreement or did you have to go to the counter??
