    Galvanized Trough - Redneck Pool

So my wife wants something at the ranch to cool off in and we are thinking of doing a galvanized trough. We wouldn't do any pump, filter or any of that; just fill it up on Saturday morning and let it drain on Sunday before we leave. Anyway, here is the dilemma - New or used?

NEW - A new 8' diameter trough appears to be $599 at Tractor Supply. I can't find a 10' diameter online but we would prefer a bigger one. Either way, this would be a buy it and set it out type of deal, should be easy. Is there a better place to buy one or does anybody know of a place that sells a 10' diameter for a similar price?

USED - We have a 10' diameter old tank at the ranch. I pulled it home on a trailer this weekend. It would work perfect but will take some work. It has a 2" hole in the side bottom where a pipe came in and it has rusted through in some spots. So what I'm thinking if we go this route is to put another pipe in the 2" hole to use as a drain, apply some type of roofing tar on the outside (bottom and 2' up) and a coat of flex seal on the inside. Looking at materials I would be about $300 plus my wife and my labor. So about half price assuming everything works the way I hope. It will likely be a little more as I'm assuming I'm forgetting something but until I get into it I think I have everything covered. My fear is I spend $300 and it still doesn't hold water but I'm also a person who would rather build it then buy it. I'm also a couple of hours in just getting it out of the ground and back home. So that is the dilemma.

So the questions are, would you go new or used given this scenario? If you go used, am I missing something or would you do something different to repair the tank I have?

Seems like a pump and filter system would be cheaper than all that water unless you're using a well to fill it.

We are on a well so no issues there. This would also be at most twice a month. I may try to save some of the water by draining it into a tank we use to fill wildlife feeders as well. I'll have to see if I can make that work.

I’d keep looking for a better quality used but if you fix the one you have you might look at a Raptor Liner kit and spray out the whole interior.

The water will be too cold to hang out in comfortably if you fill it each time you are out. It takes a long dang time for out above ground pool to warm up when we will it every year. And it is HOT out when we do. Your well water is probably going to 70 degrees. 70 is going to be brisk when you get in but you can get accustomed to it.

We bought a 9' poly tank for a pool and it has been great. More durable than the metal for moving around and storing in the off season.

Thanks, I'll check that out for the inside as it may not be as slick.

I don't know. I would like to stay away from plastic but maybe that is a better option.

Yeah, I'm hoping if we fill in the morning and let it warm up in the sun it should be good by the afternoon. When summer really hits I'm concerned it will get to be too hot like bath water. It will definitely be trial and error with it being metal and possibly black. I'm sure sun or shade will make a huge difference as well.

Thanks! It's been good. Perfect for the grandkids or for 3-4 adults to stay cool and hydrated. =)

I'm not opposed to that idea. Where did you get it and how much was it?
