    Shoulder Injuries?

Well, I had a doctors appointment this morning about some shoulder pain and found out that I have a problem with the tendon that holds my bicep in place. Right now we are just treating it with Steroids and pain killers to see if it goes away. No reason paying for xrays or MRI's if we can get it functioning again. Its either tendonitis or I have a slight tear. If it is tendonitis it will get better with this treatment, if it doesn't get better then we will do the mri's and xray route. They have me in a sling and told me to do nothing but rest it. Typing with one hand can be a chore

Anyone had this type of issue and if so what was the outcome? I have a hunt at the end of March and I am hoping I can get this pain under control to where I can at least shoot one arrow.

I have had this pain for a looooong time but after this last fishing trip it suddenly got worse... And no Glen, this is not my way of getting out of work

I have had bursitis tendoniitis for a long time. Opening morning of Bow season while moving a Doe I shot I felt a pop in my sholder. Didn't do much about it then after a month or so saw the doc. Did the MRI thing. He siad I had a 1/4" tear based on MRI. 12/12/06 had surgery to repair. They found an almost 1" tear. I am still trying to regain full range of motion and certain movements can make it hurt pretty bad. Strength is starting to come back. Due to what they believe is scar tissure they are bring out some knew torture device this week to help with streching it. This deal is not fun. IT is going to be a 9 to 12 month recovery. Hope the path you are on fixes it. I would say though it may be worth the MRI just to know.

Jeff.. I broke my shoulder in September and I was bowhunting 3 weeks later. If you can't pull back your bow without pain then PM Ragin. He hooked me up with a mouth tab. I shot my bow by pulling it back with my teeth for the first month of hunting season this last year.

Best of luck to ya. I hope its not serious and that you heal up quickly.

So if you are taking Steroids do you have to put an * in the record books if you kill a Pope and Young?

        Get well soon brother!

Good luck Jeff. I took some roids for a bad elbow. I was so wired while i took the roids. I could not stand it, neither could my family. It helped some but it's back to hurting again. Next time just a shot in the elbow for me.

LOL... I asked him if beer would fix it Heath... He said no

So I guess the steroids it is...

Thanks, Justin, I remember you telling me about that. The only problem is it is not my right shoulder, its my left, and I hold the bow with that arm.

I had the same injury at the end of my college baseball career.. It kept me from throwing or playing for about a year. If it is tendonitis, it will get better with the roids and anti-inflamitories, such as ibuprofen, or alieve. The main thing is to rest it. Tendonitis will go away, but if it is a tear in the biceps tendon, it will require surgery. If it is not a tear, it will go back into the groove, and stop popping when the inflamation goes down. My only advice is to follow dr's orders, and take it easy for a while. Shoulder injurys can haunt a bowhunter.

I'm really sorry to read about this. My only advice is do what the Dr's tell you to do for rehab/exercises and don't do anything else. No picking up the lawnmower, running the vacuum, etc. Really limit yourself so that you don't continue agravating the injury. I'm sure your wife will understand that you need to recover and that's why you can't do the dishes

Good luck with a speedy recovery - Prayers sent!

I've been battling Impingement Syndrome in my right shoulder for almost 15 years, broke my left shoulder a year and a half ago. When they bother me I take it easy as much as possible.Sometimes shooting my bow is out of the question, othe times they don't bother me at all.The main thing is do what the docs say,and avoid surgery if at all possible.

Seperated a shoulder in late 1992 playing raquetball...one too many slams into the side wall. I left bowhunting all together because of the pain and pops! Thriteen years later, I discoverd that the 80% letoffs were a godsend and decided to try it again. What I am getting at Jeff is if the pain continues, don't let it stop you.....Drop down to a 60 lb bow w/80% letoff and get after it. I have yet to have any shoulder pain since I received my 60 lb Dren in Jan....even the first day. It is a joy to shoot.

270 FPS and the effort to draw, cold or not, is nil.

                    Good luck

Either way I will not be missing the hunt, I will just be the camp cook or the beer B*&^%

Whip, I know what you mean about the popping. I have had it for over 6 months now

I went through the same scenario last year. The MRI found tendonitis, arthritis and possibly a small tear. The following authrogram(sp) indicated no tears, so they injected steroid on the spot. The authrogram was an uncomfortable procedure to put it nicely.

The six weeks following with a Physical Therapist was the cure for me. Electric shock treatment, stretching, and specific exercise designed for rotator cuff injuries. This was three times a week at the PT and every day at home. It's not really cured, but now I know how to care for my shoulder to prevent recurrence.

if nothing else you can always shoot a crossbow . plus you'll have a doctor's note now. . I had shoulder surger back in 02 it was a year before i could even pull my bow back at all. BTW popping is not a good sign. I would not try to chance it. Would you rather miss one hunt or miss the rest of them.

Jeff, I had shoulder surgery in '98 and didn't let it heal right. I had to drop my draw weight down a little, but I have been able to shoot a bow fine. My problems now are throwing a ball or fishing rod over handed. My injury was actually from shooting a bow. I was drawing on a group of hogs at 15 yards while sitting on a 5 gallon bucket with no cover. I got it to the break over and it came forward instead of going back. Like Jason said the lower weight and a high let off help, but the 80% jerks my shoulder if I let it off from full draw. My Bowtech is at about 70% right now as it is easier on my shoulder if I let it down without shooting.
