I would like to read the transcript of the entire trial and see what evidence was presented. (And see what evidence may have been suppressed by the DA) if what happened was he shot a guy who was pointing a rifle at him, then he never should have been charged. Sounds like there are conflicting stories and maybe more to it, I don’t know. It sounds like a railroad job but I’m trying not to knee jerk based on my disdain for Austin politicians. Constitutionally, Abbot can’t turn him him loose without a recommendation from the Pardon and Parole Board, right?

That is correct that the Pardon and Parole board that ABBOT APPOINTED would need to approve it. I agree with everything you said but he sure didn’t help himself with his social media posts.

This case is a really good example why some people need to watch what they say on the internet. Perry regularly made posts online and in texts about shooting looters and protesters, and many of them were racist in nature. While this appears to be a case of self defense, his history of talking about wanting to kill protesters, combined with the fact that he did just that, did not bode well for him in the trial. I see comments on this site all the time that will absolutely be used against someone if they ever end up in a situation where they defend themself.

The texts and social media were not part of the trial. These were only unsealed for the sentencing phase. Which I tend to agree with. Self defense should be judged about the facts of the case when the death occurred.

In my opinion, this is what will cook his goose. While I firmly believe his actions on that night were in self defense, what you post on social media will come back to haunt you.
