2023 Big Bend Boys RV Trip Recap!!

2023 Big Bend Boys Trip Recap!

If you have this magical place on your bucket list, do not wait!

We had a lot of moving parts to make this trip work.

I drove to New Braunfels and picked up two of my buddies. From there we went to pick a 32’ Class C RV that would be our chariot for the trip.

We then drove to Bracketville and picked up my buddy from Goldthwaite who parked at a friends house.

Lastly we picked up the last guy at Del Rio International Airport who flew in from DFW. His flight was delayed in DFW due to a catering truck hitting the wing and damaging it of the flight he was on. 90 min delay of getting to another plane.

Last stop before heading west was Walmart/Rudy’s in Del Rio for last minute items and fuel.

Started the 5 hour trek about 7:30pm.

Arrived at the Big Bend Adventure RV and Motel about 12:30am and settled in. Everyone was pretty whooped so we turned in and were up at 7am.

Many people told us this trip was not worth it without another form of transport of than the RV. I’m here to tell you that is 100% BS for the most part.

Were we restricted to some of the parks highlights yes we were particularly Chisos Basin.

HOWEVER - for the quick 2-1/2 day trip we planned, it was a perfect way to see the park all together with a “crapper and kitchen” on wheels.

Day 1 - we headed to Hot Springs Trail. We had to park about 1/2 mile from the trail head. We went off trail and got a good 2-1/2 mile total hike in to the visitor area and hot springs. We opted to cool off in the river versus the spring as it was already upper 80s and very little wind.

From there we hiked back to camper and had a sandwich lunch and a couple of beverages.

We decided from there we headed to the Boquillas Canyon trail. Parking was tight but we were able to park in a turn out just before the main parking area.

This area is absolutely beautiful with the Rio Grande carving the canyon.

Found some cool cave/cut outs. Hiked all around the canyon. Once again - cooled off in the river for a solid hour chatting with other tourists.

As far as view and aesthetics this was my favorite stop.

By the end of this hike we were whooped. Headed to check our Rio Grande Village. If I were to come back I think this is where I would camp.

Nice shaded areas full of Cottonwoods and a nice camp store.

Headed to town to grab a “healthy” dinner of Pizza and Beers at Long Draw Pizza. Solid place to grub and they had live music as well on the patio.

    More to come…

We headed back to the rv park for much needed showers and relaxation.

That evening we chatted while picking guitars and reminiscing stories of our college days.

The group consisted of 5 of our 9 college buddies who have been best friends for 15 years.

    Turned in by 11pm.

Sleeping 5 grown men in a class c is “interesting”, can’t say I would do that again lol but it was fun and heck of an experience.

Day 2 - We planned a long hike at Window Trail.

The kicker here was we had to park in a turn out at Ross Maxwell Scenic Road instead of accessing the main trail head from Chisos Basin.

Added about 2.5 miles total to the hike but it was an awesome experience and views from that side of the Chisos.

Trail was still decent but definitely the most challenging we experienced.

Total hike was 7.4 miles from RV to Window back to RV. Not a lot of water per out the homers at Cattails Falls so we opted out.

Had an awesome sandwich lunch and met a lone experienced Big Bend hiker and he shared so much cool knowledge and history for 30 minutes. Learned more in that time than any research I had done. Never caught his name.

Once back at the RV we decided to continue the Ross Maxwell Scenic drive to Santa Elena Canyon Trail. Made a couple stops for pics on some the old ruins.

The trailhead had plenty of parking for RVs and we headed down to the river to check out the views. If you wanted a place to veg out on the water near your vehicle and bathrooms, this is the ticket.

It was by far the busiest trailhead for cars and people but was still a great highlight. Amazing views for the entire drive there and e tire drive back.

Headed back to RV park for showers and to clean up for dinner at the Starlight Theatre….

After cleaning up we headed to the Starlight.

        Got there at 6:55pm.

        Two hour wait [emoji15]

        Yeah hard pass.

We headed over to Taqueria El Milagro for street tacos. Best part BYOB!

We had a great dinner of assorted tacos and fixings. Patio dining setting. Was a perfect dinner for our last evening.

Headed back to RV park for some more picking and grinning while star gazing.

The drinks were flowing as were the stories. Turned in about 12:30am knowing we had an early start to begin our trek back to civilization in the morning…

The next morning we packed up and got on the road by 7:45am.

The drive back we went the opposite way we can in through Alpine to catch the sites from that route. Almost same timing versus going back through the park.

Stopped in Alpine for tacos and fuel.

Made our way back through Dryden / Comstock area.

One thing to note was the crazy border patrol presence between Sanderson and Comstock. I bet we saw 50 border patrol vehicles, 12 UTVs, 12 Horseback agents, and two helicopters.

It was pretty crazy as I had no clue that that desolate area was a problem Area. It’s such rough country.

We got the RV back to SA around 3:30pm.

Overall for a quick RV trip, we saw some breathtaking country and we were able to fill our time with some great Big Bend highlights.

Any longer of a trip than 3 days I do think a regular passenger vehicle is a better scenario.

It was a perfect annual reunion with my best friends and great memories made!
