2023 Big Bend Boys Trip Recap!
If you have this magical place on your bucket list, do not wait!
We had a lot of moving parts to make this trip work.
I drove to New Braunfels and picked up two of my buddies. From there we went to pick a 32’ Class C RV that would be our chariot for the trip.
We then drove to Bracketville and picked up my buddy from Goldthwaite who parked at a friends house.
Lastly we picked up the last guy at Del Rio International Airport who flew in from DFW. His flight was delayed in DFW due to a catering truck hitting the wing and damaging it of the flight he was on. 90 min delay of getting to another plane.
Last stop before heading west was Walmart/Rudy’s in Del Rio for last minute items and fuel.
Started the 5 hour trek about 7:30pm.
Arrived at the Big Bend Adventure RV and Motel about 12:30am and settled in. Everyone was pretty whooped so we turned in and were up at 7am.
Many people told us this trip was not worth it without another form of transport of than the RV. I’m here to tell you that is 100% BS for the most part.
Were we restricted to some of the parks highlights yes we were particularly Chisos Basin.
HOWEVER - for the quick 2-1/2 day trip we planned, it was a perfect way to see the park all together with a “crapper and kitchen” on wheels.
Day 1 - we headed to Hot Springs Trail. We had to park about 1/2 mile from the trail head. We went off trail and got a good 2-1/2 mile total hike in to the visitor area and hot springs. We opted to cool off in the river versus the spring as it was already upper 80s and very little wind.
From there we hiked back to camper and had a sandwich lunch and a couple of beverages.
We decided from there we headed to the Boquillas Canyon trail. Parking was tight but we were able to park in a turn out just before the main parking area.
This area is absolutely beautiful with the Rio Grande carving the canyon.
Found some cool cave/cut outs. Hiked all around the canyon. Once again - cooled off in the river for a solid hour chatting with other tourists.
As far as view and aesthetics this was my favorite stop.
By the end of this hike we were whooped. Headed to check our Rio Grande Village. If I were to come back I think this is where I would camp.
Nice shaded areas full of Cottonwoods and a nice camp store.
Headed to town to grab a “healthy” dinner of Pizza and Beers at Long Draw Pizza. Solid place to grub and they had live music as well on the patio.
More to come…
