Dozer Advice - Looking at a Komatsu D39PX-24

As usual, I'm not completely sure what I'm doing here....

We have a line on a practically new Komatsu dozer, but am also thinking about a new one.

Just looking for feedback on the brand and this model in particular.

If we buy a new one, it would be from the Austin location.

We have a case 850k been happy with it, big enough for what we need and not a to big when hauling it around. Buying used really check the undercarriage pins and rollers for excessive wear. There's alot of videos on what to look for.

The used one has 11 hours on it….apparently the reason for divorce includes the dozer.

Eleven hours ain’t scratched the paint. Komatsu dozers are pretty good machines, I’ve owned several of them. I actually liked Komatsus better than Caterpillar in the small dozers, but when you get into the D5 sizes or bigger Caterpillar is the clear winner. I would rate Komatsu as number two overall in longevity. I’ve either operated or owned dozers since I was 22/23 years old. I’m now 76 so ……..

Edit to add: If you are gonna be clearing any kind of medium sized timber, be mindful that the swivel portion of the angle blade is the weak point on any six way dozer blade. Make sure you don’t put undue stress on it by pushing with the corner of the blade. Push with the center. That goes for all of them.

I use to work for a company that was owned by Komatsu and they are a great machine.

Komatsu makes a fine dozer. I think the P39 is their 100hp machine. I’ve never owned one, but I’ve owned a few P41 that lasted forever. There is a lot to consider when buying a used dozer, number one being undercarriage life, but a used machine with 11 hours is a no brainer. I think you’ll be very happy with it.

It should still have factory warranty at 11hrs. You won't have an issue with Komatsu unless you happen to have a crappy dealer when it comes time for service.

We ran some Komatsu excavators (rentals) while our Cat excavators were tied up on other jobs. We never had a problem with them. Well .. I take that back we had one completely shut down one day while digging an underground storage tank hole. The rental service guy came out and almost immediately knew what was wrong. It was a .50 cent fuse that had blown. This was over 20 years ago. He claimed that machine had more computer chips and circuitry that the first space shuttle.[emoji3]

Unless you have a specific job for a dozer.....pond building, big cuts, tree stump removal I much prefer a track loader with a ripper. They are so much more versatile. We used Caterpillar 963B's. We moved a lot of different materials, built building pads, cut and fill for paving and loaded a lot trucks with spoils from cuts and tank holes. A Cat 943 is a similar size machine to the one you are looking at (26,000lbs).

Agree with all he said. Only thing to think about is warranty work on unit. Is someone close by?

Dont think you will go wrong with the Komatsu. My only grip with the trackhoe i have is parts are harder to obtain then Cat.

I have heard really good things about the new Cats. I also heard they are willing to deal.

Komatsu equipment is top notch and so is their service and parts department. In the post covid/supply chain world all the brands struggle for parts.

You may get a better deal on a new machine than that machine once you look at their incentives, financing (if you finance), etc.

Komatsu and Cat are the two brands I constantly see in the refinery tank farms and E Tx woods.

We have a 39 that’s only got around a 1,000 hours on it, but no problems out of it so far and it works for what we use it for. Our Utility fleet( Excavators, wheel loaders, dozers) are now all Komatsu and we’ve been happy with the performance and customer service from Kirby Smith.
