IMO, the 2 advantages to the freeze dried branding are that it's not painful and the dog can be identified from a distance. One of your neighbors could easily ID it and let you know if they saw your dog on their property.

That said, I'm about to get a Lacy pup from a litter that's 3 weeks old and I will not be branding mine.

I bet hot branding a dog will get you charged with cruelty to animals.

An orange collar would be nice. This way I’ll know if they’re wild dogs or an owner that lets them run through my land.

Cut most of their tail off.

Back in the day this dog was my pride and joy. Best dog I ever owned and once he was gone, never had an interest in owning another. Absolutely loved him. Had my “W” brand freeze branded in his hip when he was young. He never even whimpered when we did it.

He was a hammer and the best family dog a guy could ask for. My daughter was 2 at the time and he would lay there as long as she wanted him to and she would dress him in princess clothes, brush him, and then lay on him. Never worried about the kids playing outside (lived in the country then) when he was with them. He wouldn't leave their side.....

I have seen many hunting and cow dogs branded with a freeze brand. No hot brands.

Freeze branding dog is nice when working with a lot of similar looking dogs like Lacys or Cats and you need your dog called out. For example when 5 dogs are gathering cattle and your dog won't honor the lead dog or you've bayed and are holding a hog and you need your dog called out so the pinner can get in.
