Checked billfish off the bucket list, many times over!

My wife and I did Costa Rica about 10 years ago and it has been our favorite place to vacation since. Nothing compares to Costa Rica!

This time we brought our kids and another family along. We planned two full days offshore with Double Nickel Charters along with a white-water rafting trip and a waterfall cliff jumping tour.

We were not disappointed at all. The Airbnb was a big hit with the kids, swimming pool in the jungle.

We had monkey’s come visit us and one came and got a drink of water while we were in the pool.

My oldest daughter hand fed them bananas. This was a big hit for the trip. The kids loved seeing the monkeys, and my daughter especially loved feeding them.

One of the highlights of the trip for me was coffee on the patio every morning seeing all the birds and wildlife. We obviously saw monkeys and more monkeys but also toucans, macaws, and a long list of birds I can’t name.

Our first day of fishing we went two for two on sail and then we found the biggest tuna pod I’ve ever seen in my life. Tuna boiling and jumping out of the water. We were able to jig for them and loaded the boat up. I lost count but I’m positive it was over 20, we started catching and releasing tuna before we were done. We caught two decent Mahi after we left the tuna pod and headed in.

Bill fish has been on my bucket list for decades, I grew up on the Alabama coast and have fished Costa Rica before, as well as Florida, several places in the Caribbean, Mexico, and Bermuda but have always struck out. I was able to check that off the list on the first day of fishing.

The following day we rafted the Naranjo River in the Talamanca Mountains. We had wonderful guides, and it was an amazing trip. Fun for everyone. Both of our wives got tossed out into the drink (no injuries) and made for an exciting trip.

Next up was our waterfall tour and talk about a crazy coincidence. A few months ago I was wasting time on TikTok and came across these crazy cliff jumping kids. They really do some wild stuff. I shared some of the videos with my wife and others as some of the stuff they do is incredible. The TikTok account is Ryan Bean, but it mostly features Reagan Popoff. Guess who picked us up for our waterfall tour. Reagan Popoff. I recognized him and was telling my wife this is the guy I sent her videos of a few months ago doing all the crazy jumps. He was a super cool kid and has only been in CR for 10 days and is there gathering content for his social media and working as a tour guide. Pretty cool deal, check them out on social media if you get a chance. The tour was exceptional, and my oldest daughter Reese jumped off a 35 ft. cliff at our last waterfall.

The waterfall tour ended on an absolutely beautiful beach named Windows Beach. The “Windows” are two caves that you can walk through that feed out to the Pacific. We played in the waves for a bit inside the cave but didn’t risk exiting into the ocean. The seas were pretty rough that day.

Fishing was up again, and the ladies and kids decided to opt out. They decided to tour the Manuel Antonio National Park. That was fine, boys’ trip on the water! We told the captain we wanted to hunt bill fish all day, we really wanted a marlin but never found one. No complaints though, just me and my buddy Jason and we went nine for eleven on sails and I landed a giant Mahi! Solid trip! We were the number one charter boat in the entire Quepos marina that day. The Pacific was as flat as a lake all day. For sure the best day of fishing in my lifetime.

Check out this video for some awesome jumps and excellent under water footage from one of my sailfish.

All in all, my wife and I basically mirrored our vacation from 10 years ago and it was just as good if not better the second time around.

This is why when people ask where to go on vacation, my answer is always Costa Rica every time!

We ate like kings for sure. We took tuna in and they just started a buffet of tuna coming out from sushi to cooked any way you can think of. We brought way to much and were passing plates to other tables around us as it came out. We made a lot of friends that night.

Do you have a link to the airbnb. Did you all rent a vehicle and hire a chef to cook. I’m interested in this.

Congrats. I’ve fished on the Double Nickel down there several times over the years. When Nick was running it and the current Captain Roy. Those boys are good fisherman.

I’ll be back down there in a couple weeks. Can’t wait.
