    Brick/Rock vs Siding cost.

What are the cost savings per sq. ft. when building a new home with brick/rock over some type of siding. I see lots of stuff with 100% siding being built and always wondered how much the person was actually saving when you figure in the high cost of paint and labor, plus the maintenance that will be required down the road. It's going to get expensive having to paint the whole house every ten years or so and replacing wood that rots over time. It runs at least 3500-5000 just to paint an average size house that is 100% brick/rock.

Lot of the siding is what I call "CEMENT BOARD." It is mostly impervious to weather or rot, but you still have to paint it. Also, hail storms can do a number on this type of siding.

3-5K to paint a house that is 100% brick is way too high. All you should have to paint is the roof trim, eaves and fossettes. Should be able to do that for $500.

You might be able to paint it yourself for $500 (paint cost only), but ain`t no way you`re going to get someone to do it for that price. Good painters aren`t cheap and have all the work they want. I remodeled 100% of my old house in 2013 and the painters I used on the inside wanted almost 3K to do the outside. I found someone to do it for 900 and I buy the paint. That was a steal 10 years ago.

In my area more of the siding over brick is 100% due to the labor is unavailable or 1 year plus out….

My house is 100% James hardie. I built in 2001. Needs to be painted every 10 or so years and it’s expensive. “$500 job won’t get a paint crew in a truck”. You can paint yourself for that if your time has no value and you have the equipment and skill to do it

Painted my own with an electric sprayer, its not that hard. Of course it takes time but its my house so its actually required to put some time into it once in awhile.?
The worst/hardest part was getting it clean, used a power washer but that thing will make you sore using it. The Hardi-board should be pretty easy to clean, mine was just wood boards on the trim and under the eaves, then the garage steel door.
Just don't go cheap on the paint though or you'll be doing it next year.

              Brick/Rock vs Siding cost.

You’re not painting a siding house for less than 4000, and that would be a small house.

Have you ever seen golf ball sized hail in 50mph wind?

There’s a reason we build houses with brick in Texas.

Siding is more expensive over the life of the home.

This is also the conclusion I came to, but wanted confirmation from someone who would actually knows the per sq. ft. savings when building from experience. I can see if someone just liked the look, but if it were to cut the cost when building, you`re just going to pay more down the road in paint and labor. I also understand building a spec house with more siding to get the cost down also.

Also, stone is roughly double the cost of brick per sf.

We built last year with Hardie siding and paid $6,000 to have it painted.

Never got a good answer to this question last week, so I`ll put it another way. One 2,000 sq. ft. house is built exactly the same as another, but one is 100% brick and the other is 100% siding of some sort. How much on average is someone saving by using the siding.
