First I'd look into replacing the original unit.

Also adding insulation to your attic will help. I know if you buy the insulation from Home Depot they "rent" you the machine for free. Pretty simple, easy, and not too costly process.

As for windows you may want to look into some of that window film they sell. Much cheaper option than replacing windows. I have no experience with this so I have no idea how well they work but it may be an option.

Insulation, insulation, insulation. If u can't change windows then get thick heavy curtains.
Heat pumps will save u some money, but before someone sells u the latest and greatest 20 seer high efficiency unit run the cost savings numbers between that and the lowest seer heat pump they offer, u may be surprised by which one is overall cheaper when all costs are included over the 12 to 15 year life of an HVAC unit.

The older unit is much smaller and 10 SEER which is obviously not efficient.

Thermostat is set set pretty low, below 70 for heating and 76 for A/C.

Last months kWh charge from Navarro Electric Coop (we have no choice) was $0.158 which is a good 60% higher than the coop that my mom retired from, Bluebonnet Electric.

Not sure what the price was this time over the past few years as it's my mother-in-laws home and we have been living there hoping the housing market/new construction prices come back to blue collar prices which is not looking good. I don't remember seeing or hearing the monthly bill over the past 4 months averaging $630. Maybe I'm the only family member that has questioned the reason for the horrible efficiency.

The heat pump will be the best option if it can be a retro, I'll also look into the replacement aspect as well as talking to local guys about windows. I sprayed the attic cat insulation when we lived in San Antonio so that is pretty easy to do.

        Thanks again everyone

I bought a heat pump and it saved me a lot of money on my electric bill.

I don’t think windows are your problem. Where is the thermostat compared to the returns. Is it warmer in other areas of the house. Add a propane tank and a few infrared heaters. They are very efficient. A 100amp load for heat sounds like a lot.

Before you buy new windows, buy some high grade caulk and weather stripping and go to town. Same of weather stripping on doors.

Then see if you get a difference.

That's pretty steep for electric prices.
