One of my biggest pet peeves is the improper use of the word "of." Here are two more examples:

1. "Sergeant OF Arms." (The correct title is "Sergeant AT Arms.")

2. Using the preposition "of" between an adjective and a noun. A few examples,

"It's not that big OF a deal."
(Should be "It's not that big a deal.")

"It's not that difficult OF a problem."
(Should be "It's not that difficult a problem.")

"It's not that hard OF a test."
(Should be "It's not that hard a test.")



So, when DO you use "of"?

The word "of" is a preposition generally indicating one of two things: 1) possession or 2) expressions of quantity or parts of a whole.

Examples of possession:

The leg of the chair is broken.
The beat of the song is slow.

*Note that using "of" or, more correctly "of the," is similar to using an apostrophe-s to show possession. Use "of" or "of the" when referring to something inanimate (the chair and the song in the above sentences are not alive). Use apostrophe-s with people, organizations, and animals.

Examples of expressions of quantity:

A lot of people struggle with math.
A number of hunters shoot guns.
A majority of people on TBH are men.

Examples of parts of a whole:

A slice of pie.
A piece of the puzzle.



Next up, another one of my grammatical pet peeves...

Using "like" as an article.

Since we got to violence. I would like to find the guy who invented the shutoff at the red-light feature in my truck and give him a swift kick. If he is dead, I would be willing to dig him up to do it.
