I broke my neck high jumping in high school doing the flop. They moved the mat for a right side jumper before me and didn't move it back. I was too young and dumb to know the difference and I missed the mat. Landed neck first on the asfalt. Didn't do that again.

Glad you are still with us. I remember seeing a couple kids miss the landing, but always in junior high.

When I was a kid in the mid 60's I had a book called "Young Olympic Champions". One of the athletes they profiled was a Russian high jumper named Valery Brumel who held the record at 7' 5". I was fascinated that somebody could launch themselves over a bar that high. This was pre-Fosbury so they used the western roll or straddle technique. I think the record now is over 8'.

I remember Valery Brumel.
