As said above, bird wing and a fishing pole is a cute thing to do to see your puppy on point (I did it), but doesn’t do much for actual training. You’re actually teaching your dog to point on sight instead of pointing on scent.

Number one thing is keeping up with obedience. I have 2 pointers myself and my first was a demon and the hardest dog to train because I let her get that way. With guidance from a trainer while I was on Vet school, she has become an amazing dog although she is slowing down now at 10 years old. That being said, the guy I worked with would not let us touch birds until I had FULL obedience off leash with her. She about gave me an aneurysm multiple times working through some stuff, but after working with her, my GWP was a breeze to train.

If your dog has good genetics, the birds come second nature, but the big factor is whether YOU can control them and guide them to do what you want. Good luck!

Recall and whoa training is where I would focus. Depending on how big your dog runs those could be life saving commands in the field.

I use a 12-14' long 2x12 between two lawn chairs for my whoa training. Back and forth to get her used to the board, then mix in some whoa commands while stopping her by grabbing her chest. When she stops without contact and you can walk circles around her without her moving an inch you're getting somewhere. Treats initially but wean her off. This was the method taught to me by a long time WTX handler and has served me well.

Congrats on your new full time job.

Id stop with the wing. It can teach them to just sight point. If they have it in them, they will point on their own. What a well bred pointer needs to be taught is to hold and when to fetch/search. At 4mos though, i wouldnt worry too much about that. Everything fun, short sessions. Maybe go to the Lone Star NAVHDA training days. Folks there will be very helpful

Pointing Dogs is a great book to start with.

I have GSPs right now. They want to hunt.

One of the best things I did for mine was take them hunting with experienced GSPs. They follow their lead so well. Instinctively honor point.

          Really cool to watch.

I also send mine to a trainer when they are a year old for 6-8 weeks so maybe I'm no help.
