Don't take this as offense, but it sounds like you are trying to talk yourself out of it more than into it. Your heart appears to be seeking it, so why not follow and take the leap of faith?
As someone who was baptized young, i personally have struggled with whether or not to do it again as an adult when i truly know and understand the meaning of it.
What has helped me recently, in your beginning statements is to read on biblical archeology discoveries that help connect the bible to real life. Connecting those dots helps deepen my faith and suggest that as an avenue to explore.

BUT I also think it serves as your "press conference" as a Christian...and that's a good thing!
There is built in accountability that comes with publicly making your profession of faith.
Let everyone know who you are...then go be that person!
But don't do it for yourself...do it out of grattitude for what the Lord has done for you on the cross!.
Do it because it will make others in your life think of their own salvation...and maybe change their life!
Jesus himself started the ministry phase of his life by being baptized. Likewise, your baptism could be a landmark in your life.
Pride and feeling foolish is probably the biggest thing holding you back.
Punt that pride and take the plunge is my advice!
Prayers for you my friend!

That being said, being baptized and accepting the gift of salvation that Christ died to give us, is a “rebirth” if you will. How many babies have you ever seen born who stood up and walked immediately? How many started running marathons at 6 months old? Zero…it’s a daily process of leaning on Christ and allowing Him to help us grow and walk with Him. “Falling” is completely different from intentionally doing wrong. And while we indeed ARE saved by grace alone, our daily walk is important. 1 Thessalonians 4 is a good read, the NIV makes it easier to understand in todays language.
Great thread

If baptisms were required, the thief on the cross didn’t make it…. Jesus said otherwise. Baptism is not only symbolic but also an act of obedience
Baptism is a sign of your repentance
