    What pipe & tobacco?

So we have the "What Cigar..." thread, but are there any pipe smokers here? I talking about "old-school" tobacco pipes, not the type that might be considered illegal.

I've always been drawn to a pipe tobacco smell, ever since I was a kid. My Grandfather used to smoke pipes. While I'm still a cigar smoker, I'm trying out some pipe tobacco and was wondering if there were others here.

    Just throwing it our there.

I just picked up my first about a month or two ago I enjoy it much more than cigars. I am interested in learning more. I am very casual, smoke only on the weekends, maybe once or twice a month.

I'm currently puffing on one of the two hand-me-down pipes I got from what was left out of my grandfather's large collection. The tobacco is a blend from a local cigar/pipe shop called "Highland Whiskey." I am thoroughly enjoying the flavor.

There are several things that go into a good pipe. One thing to do is look at the wood grain. Try to find one that has a grain running up and down on the bowl. It will generally smoke cooler. As for the tobacco, what I’ll do, if I’m not familiar with the tobaccos in a store I’ll just buy an ounce of their best seller. It’s usually a decent smoking tobacco.

As a kid, my neighbor smoked Amphora. I loved the smell of it.

I do partake on an occasion. Mainly burn a blend the local judge made that leans on the stronger side. It’s not harsh at all and pairs well with our drinks in the evenings. Imagine if you will a cavendish that’ll make your head spin if not used to really strong tobacco. As far as pipes go, typically I’ll grab the Peterson Standard with a bent stem.

I smoke pipes almost as much as a good cigar. I have several that I have bought over the years and even two that I made out of mesquite. My newest is a Prohibition Pipe Co. Poker style that I really like. As far as tobacco, I like a lot of the smoother flavors. Sunset Bay Rum, Hobbit Weed and a local blend called Brazos. My grandfather always smoked a pipe and was usually filled with good old Sir Walter Raleigh. Never tried it, but loved the smell of it....

Back when I used to smoke a face furnace my favorite pipe was a Savinelli briar with long oval shank. Flying Dutchman tobacco.

I smoked pipes for many years, but stopped cold about 18 years ago when I had neck surgery. I knew that tobacco slowed down healing by reducing blood flow and sure didn't want to go back to the pain I had before. I sure enjoyed smoking them, but don't remember what pipes or tobacco, except that it was usually a vanilla of some kind. My dad smoked plain old SWR.

My dad smoked Sir Walter Raleigh tobacco, and I still vividly remember the smell.

I really like Lane 1-Q from Pipes and Cigars. I much prefer to smoke my pipe over a cigar

You can't go wrong with Lane 1-Q...one of the best. I always stick to buying tobacco from a pipe shop (their own blends) or if you go to Pipes and Cigars online, they sell tobacco in bulk from 1oz-24oz. I prefer bulk and not packaged (packaged is Captain Black, Borkum Riff, etc.) because the bulk has no added chemicals to keep the shelf life like packaged tobacco does. I usually stick to aromatics to get the room note, but their are several non aromatics that can give a good room note and get some flavor. Can't go wrong with starting out with a good corn cob pipe by Missouri Meerschaum, smokes well, good price, and your aromatic blends always smoke well and taste good in a cob. Unlike a cigar, its good to restart a pipe several times to keep it a slow burn and get no tongue bite.

Anyone in dfw want to meet up and smoke a bowl sometime? I am new and could learn a thing or two, and would appreciate the conversation.

I have a Club Humidor (local cigar & tobacco shop) less than mile from my office, so I’ve spent some money supporting local businesses! I really want to start on a pipe collection. I need to stop by and grab another flavor of tobacco. They have a San Antonio Blend I’m interested in trying.

Also, one of the two pipes I currently have has a crack in the bowl. It’s about 5/8” long starting at the rim of the bowl and slightly diagonal off horizontal. Anybody ever repair a pipe before?

Club Humidor has a blend called tawny port that is my personal favorite.
