    Contest update for those without
    Facespace…
it’s slowly starting to take shape! We’re closing in on getting all the prizes for our contestants at The Last Frontier - Contest, once in we’ll send everything off to get embroidered and bases for trophies! With that said it also hit home today a milestone, one I once merely mulled over. A community that highlighted the thing and place I loved that’s Mexico whitetail hunting! I never really had a big thought out process or a 20 year plan (odd for me lol), but i had a core value and idea for this. One I’ve conveyed to anyone that asked or sponsors that wanted to know more. I want everyone to win, I want everyone to feel apart/included, I want everyone to feel welcomed, I want everyone to feel proud to be apart of, And mostly I want to carry on the legacy many before me have done. A place where it’s still truly wild and free. I wanted to pull a chair up to the table of those before me. I want to support the many great organizations in the same field, and I wanted to bring our own uniqueness to a niche in the industry often forgotten or not experienced. Glory to god for putting so many great men, women, and companies in my network. I truly believe anyone involved in any level are genuinely great people! I battled most my life with people that didn’t want me to succeed or diminished my small accomplishments anywhere they could, and I strive whole heartedly to make this community built on a great network looking to lift everyone from rookie to veteran, from small business to magazine worthy companies! A place where iron sharpen irons and rising tides raise all boats! Thank you, thank you, thank you! To all that sponsor, enter, and follow along…I and we love you all! GOD BLESS- COREY

          Question:

Our ranch, like most ranches, has a variety of brush type. We have some fields of sage with sporadic mesquites mixed in, then other areas are thick mesquites with grass / cactus. Since you are all expert long time mexican vets, between those two types of brush which do you tend to find more deer / bigger deer? There is also the "black brush" or whatever you called it mixed in everywhere.

Most, free range, mature bucks killed in S. Texas/ Mexico are killed during the rut. Mature bucks like to push does in “more open” areas. Buffle fields, cactus flats etc….. Even if you see a mature buck on a sendero in thicker brush you may only have a couple of seconds to get a shot off. We’ve shot a majority of our mature bucks in “pear flats” or “cactus flats” as some call them. Also in/around lagoona’s close to water. Good luck

True big deer are where you find them. Most heavy rutting areas might only produce a large number of young and middle age bucks. Most true Old deer will isolate thier self from high numbers of younger bucks come rut. It all depends on what class of deer your hunting. Where high volume areas can be fun to watch and kill middle age bucks regardless of size it can be the last place you ever see a giant post mature deer ever show up. Early season is always about the feed, mid season is always about the rut, and late season is back to feeding areas. The only true common ground for all season and all classes of deer is water. Other than that big deer will stay in thier very small home range that each deer establishes over time.

I would just as soon roller chop or root plow our very thickest country. those areas have the lowest density of deer. Granted we don't really have the sage flats or Mesquite grass flats as referenced but do have some large areas of guajillo in the hills. It's our weakest country. As Bo said the biggest bucks are where you find them and as I think about it there is no pattern to the best bucks we have taken. The real trick is to distribute as much food and water as you can. Every year I get a better appreciation of the value of water distribution.
