Question for my Catholic brothers and sisters

Why Friday and why meat? I have asked many Catholics this question, to date I have received no answer….other than my mama did it, my grandmother did it.

For those that dont know, the question pertains to Lenten.

Please, honest answers only, no mean comments, no anti-Catholic comments. Please, just hit the back button. No arguments, please keep it civil.

    Thanx Calvin

Why do Catholics eat fish on Friday during Lent? The tradition dates from a time when meat was a luxury and seafood wasn't.

Direct from Google, took all of 11 seconds.

For those who think it's easier to annoy you than to Google 'Why cant catholics have meat during lent' themselves.

Catholics used to abstain from meat every Friday but that changed. You could eat meat any Friday except during Lent. No meat on Fridays is just a sacrifice we make for The Lord. I am a cradle Catholic 70 years old, went to Catholic school through the 9th grade. I have been saved through Jesus Christ my Lord and Savior.

For the same reason they still have Jesus on the Cross.

'I have been saved through Jesus Christ my Lord and Savior.'

This is the important part and the only reason any of us will get into heaven! We are sin & sin can't get into heaven-without Jesus to wash away those sins.

            The rest is details.

It is really no sacrifice to eat something you like.

              Ok thanx.

Actually got an answer from a guy I work with. First time for everything.
              I was curious about why.

Just a man made “rule” is all, nothing more or less
But if man dictates to another man when to fast, is it really fasting?
And I’m not putting down Catholics, I studied and practiced Catholicism for 45 years

All religions/denominations have their traditions. I understand that to be one.

For us Baptists it is akin to the 5th Sunday communion/singing lol.

Not salvivic in nature just a tradition.

It is not a man made Rule! It is in scripture and As Catholics we don’t Have to fast- we do it in reverence to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. If Catholics feel as if they Have to fast then that is very sad. Once again Brother Leemo - I’m very sorry that in all of your years as a Catholic you felt that you were Made to be reverent.

I was taught growing up that meat was a delicacy way back in the bible days, reserved mostly for celebration meals/parties. People started giving up meat on Friday's as a way to give up something that was a treat in honor of Jesus.
As I've gotten older I think it may have actually started because Jesus gave up his flesh so they started not eating it as a show of reverence/honor.
I do it as a form of fasting to keep my heart and mind on Jesus and His sacrifice during the days of lent. I always worship him but truly try deepen my following throughout lent and try to carry it on throughout the year. I give up things, pray more and try to give back more.
I know there's a lot of animosity towards Catholics. I hear it often. I just don't see the negatives with observing and participating in lent. I see lots of positives though. I truly accept Jesus as my Savior and truly believe in his teachings, sacrifices, death and resurrection. I Love everyone as Jesus taught and pray daily for everyone. I pray for reconciliation of all Gods people and for an end to the negativity.
