Mary's been freezing and blanching vegetables. We've been eating as many green beans as we can which is outstanding for me. Had some of our little gold Pearl potatoes or whatever they're called with some boiled shrimp and mushrooms the other day. Mary's wanting to plant some winter squash so I'm weeding/cultivating an area that we neglected. This thing paid for itself today.

We're just now starting to get some cucumbers. Does anybody have a good dill pickle recipe. Prefer something that's not sweet.

I always thought squash borers were the devil. This yr. absolutely no problem. BUT a new demon has arrived. Fusarium wilt.Soil born and has killed about 15 of my tomato plants and a couple peppers. Seems only solution I've learned is to move my trellises and not plant in same place for a few years.

The plants grow beautifully then wilt and die. Been quite frustrating. Good news is I still have about 15 more plants...so far.

Have had my squash fruit starting to rot. I think I have a calcium deficiency so I will be heading to grab some bone meat tomorrow and might hit the garden with some
Blood meal as well. I have need feeding the fox farm big bloom weekly but I’m not getting the other nutrients needed.

After 3 weeks of insane squash production- the vine bores got me.

Tomatoes are just now turning. Never had a crop like this.

            Peppers are doing great.

Grew cantaloupe for the first time. Have 6 set do far. Hope they finish.

Slicer cucumber’s are doing good. Still producing.

              Got ours put in

              This is our first.
The pails by the post are tomatoes, the other pails are Bell Peppers
In the oval tubs we have, from top to bottom. Lettuce, carrots, peas, green beans, heirloom green beans.

We used Worm Castings as organic fertilizer.

We used some packets from Atwoods last year that were really good. Mrs...(something that I can't remember). kosher was really good, even better with a couple jalapeños in the jar. I know you said not sweet, but the bread and butter were awesome.

                    I tole ya!!

You have done well grasshoppa for a first time gardener!! By next year, you'll be giving advice on the how-to-garden questions!!
BTW, we found the whole "blanching" part of canning is a total waste of time unless you just want to blanch tomatoes so it's easy to remove the skins for canning whole or cubed... Peas, corn, squash, okra, and just about everything else, we just wash and vacuum seal... We're eating purple hull peas and corn from 2018 still and they're just like fresh!

If they're rotting when they're really small, it's probably more likely that it's a pollination issue. The female blooms will make a little squash. If it's not pollinated, it will get smushy and die. If you don't have enough pollinators, you can do it by hand with a qtip or brush. The male bloom won't have a squash. Brush it first, then the one with the little squash.

We've had a good couple days harvest. Wife and daughter put up squash, apples, berries and peppers today... This evening we have had 1.79" of rain!! It made up and came outta nowhere!! My weeding tiller is sitting out in the middle of the garden... It'll be there for a few days now until it dries up some AGAIN!!! A good rain was helpful, but we didn't need over 1 3/4"!! I'll go out and look in the morning, but I figure I'll be pumping again...

Here are a few random pics of things from this morning...

We personally like the recipe on the Mrs. Dash seasoning packs! Their Kosher and Polish dills are VERY nice. Hamburger dills are really good for the slicer cukes too. I like the bread and butter pickles but my bride doesn't like those...

I'll be sure to pass this on to Mary. I guess somewhere along the way she was told she needed to blanch to keep them tasting fresh. Thanks.

Same for us Bobby. Read about garden direct to freezer when we first got started here on the prairie and decided to try it along with vacuum sealing… haven’t blanched anything since.
