I practically grew up with my grandfather on that lake. He owned a place on the La side about 19 or 20 miles north of the Pendleton Bridge and had fished it since it was first dammed up. I've seen him catch fish like that who never saw the light of day. Straight into the cooler it went.
I remember once we were running in the boat heading back to the house, and came across a huge largemouth that was floating in one of the boat rows, alive but near death. It had a huge head but slender body and we could tell is was sick or maybe old age was getting the best of it. We picked it up and weighed it when we got to the boathouse and it still weighed ten pounds! We both remarked that we would have liked to see it healthy. Would have been an incredible bass.
I had no idea Toledo could produce bass that size. It’s always about Rayburn.
Toledo has always been able to produce fish like that. Back in its heyday it was an incredible lake. It has changed a lot over the years and many have felt it has also been mismanaged by the SRA too.
Just like quality ranches and whitetail, you don't always hear about every lunker pulled out of any lake.
Imagine catching an 11.58 and a 10.12 and getting told you placed 2nd and 3rd big bass..
Suckers were probably counting their money before weigh in.
I fished a tournament there once that a 38lbs bag took 3rd. Dickey Newberry caught 41+ pounds. The 2 place team stopped fishing 4 hours early because they knew they had it won.
