My granddad told me about doing this all the time when I was a kid in the middle’70 to middle 80s
    Never seen it done.
Makes me think of him though.
I have caught them in clear water with the foil on the pan Of a Victor.

For some reason, the spike in log method just seems cruel to me. On the other hand, I've had no problem using Duke's to dispatch raccoons. Got to be just as painful as spikes. Maybe it's because I read about similar set ups being used by the Vietcong against U.S. troops where a soldier would unwittingly step into the covered up spike laden hole. Just too humanized for me but won't judge anyone for doing it.

I guess I'm kind of soft because I won't set them (Duke's) or leave them if I can not check them every day. I have set a few and subsequently left the raccoon, dispatched on the following day, in the trap. I don't trust raccoons to be good and dead no matter how many shots it takes me to get them to play dead. So, yes, I regularly return to traps where I dispatched a raccoon, where only a leg bone is left sticking out.

I've lost a couple of Duke's due to poor anchoring/laziness on my part. I like to picture old 3 legged grandpa coon hanging out with the kits in the hollow log with my Duke mounted above the fire place (not sure how that works in a tree but also not concerned), and him starting out with something like "Listenup! Did I ever tell you 'bout how I acquired that fine piece a jewelry setting right der?" while pointing at one of my missing Duke's with his remaining front paw.

Duke’s dog proof coon traps have worked very well for me too!

When our twins were just learning to read, my wife asked me for a good classic book she could read to them. I told her "Where the Red Fern Grows". She'd never read it, so they started it. They'd read a little every night before bed. At the end of the book, one of the twins could read good enough to finish reading it aloud, and had to, because my wife was sobbing. When she was done, she was like, "Why would you have me read that? That's the saddest book I've ever read.". Great book.

I have a friend that used to hunt coons with dogs. Said he could paralyze them by reaching inside a hole...grabbing them with his fingers in the ear holes and pulling them out. I didn't believe him until I saw him do it at work. Some half grown young ones in a wall...

My mind is not picturing this. Can you perhaps explain it a little clearer? I've only coon hunted once with dogs but never trapped them.

Take a piece of foil about 4 inches by 4 inches and crumple it up. Spread it back out and wrap around an # 1.5 trap's pan shiny side out. Set the trap. Place in a creek or stream in shallow running water. No need to hide the trap or bait in any other way. Put a good drag on the trap. A coon will see it shining in the water and try to pick up the foil setting off the trap. You may have to wait until the moon is up to have one reflect enough light.
