How do you find a new Deer Lease?

So I'm currently on a lease in S TX and my daughter has started hunting with me. She really hates the 6 hr drive from Houston, so in order to keep her hunting with me I'm going to find something closer to home, 2-3 hrs from Houston. I've been on this forum a long time & seen many "looking for lease" threads go unanswered.

So, my question is, how do I find a new lease these days? Where is the best place to look? Should I pay one of those websites or people who claim to search for a lease for you?

I've been on my current lease 12+ years, and I was brought on to that one by a friend; so I've never really searched for a lease.

    Thx

Keep an eye out on here
Look on lease finder sites - LeaseHunter.com, is one i think
    Look on Craigslist
Look in small town local newspapers
Post your info in small town feed stores
Keep an ear to the ground
Tell your friends to keep an ear to the ground
    Hope you get lucky

Don’t quit your present lease till you find a new one
Find your new zone and search then search some more

Don’t get off the one you are on until you find another! Buy land, seriously if you have the money you can find a lease. Cheap leases are a thing of the past.
Another option is to drive around in an area you want to lease and look for a place with no stands or feeders. Locate the owner and make contact. You never know. This is how we find our duck hunting spots.

Talk to anyone you know that is buying or has bought 3+ acres they plan to build a house on in the future. You'd be surprised the number of these that don't hunt and would let you. Usually 3-20 acre tracks.

Also just talk to anyone who owns land and lives on it. I've hunted co-workers parents land 4-8 acres.. Heck even hunted a guys backyard one year. Subdivision with 5-8 acre tracks.

Or find land that's been listed for sale for a long time and ask if they lease to hunters.

Another option is to keep your lease if you're happy with it and enter her into the TPWD youth draws. Youth have pretty high draw odds and often great standby odds (Chaparral youth doe they take them all no matter how many show).

edit: I wonder if anyone's ever "swapped spots" on leases. Maybe somebody closer to Houston is looking for a spot on a South Texas lease and yall could pull a switcharoo.

                This is a great idea.

My daughters were drawn frequently for some good hunts when they were age eligible. They would have had plenty of opportunities to kill game but they weren't serious about the killing and so we just had fun.

Thanks for the feedback. I looked into leasehunter briefly, but didn't know if that was more of a scam or waste of time. I've got word out to some friends that raise cattle, to ask amongst their rancher friends, but most of that is pasture land.

We aren't dropping our current lease until we find a new one. Plus, I have a trailer & numerous stands & feeders on that old lease after being on it for 12+ years; so changing isn't an easy undertaking.

The idea of driving around blindly looking seems very daunting when my desired areas are so vast. I could drive for days. LOL

The idea of small town news papers is kind of how my father and I did it many many years ago. Probably gonna look into that.

                  Thx!

Agreed. The idea of a draw for her is cool, but a lot of what I like is just hanging out & spending time with her. She's 9, I may not get too many more years like these.

Call a few realtors in the area you want to hunt

If you can afford it,maybe get on a 2nd lease closer & see how y'all like it. Tough to get off a good lease & then find out you messed up. Probably going to be tough to find anything as good as what you have that close to Houston.

Does she go with you every time you go ?

If not go on some weekend hunts with her on different ranches most of them have good deals for kiddos. And in all reality it’s cheaper then getting a lease. And usually have better odds at getting a deer on those places.

I see them on here often. This is where I found mine in Eldorado

i would look for out of state land owners and contact them via the County's CAD.
