Ok fellas, I planted a great garden this year back is late March, I heard from a friend that I should harvest my potatos when the plant starts to die, isthat right?

when to pick my taters

I assume that you are talking about irish potatios. That being the case, just use a large spoon and check around a few of them to see if they are mature. You can dig them any time that you feel they are to the stage that you like, but as has been stated above, if the leaves start to die then it is definately time to dig, because they have completed their growth cycle.

You can get small "new potatoes" about a week after they stop blooming. Bigger taters once the vines start to get woody and die. Bigger yet once the vines die completely back to the ground. Once you dig all of them leave them laying for a few days without washing off the dirt in order to let the skins toughen. Clean off by hand and store in a cool dark dry place.
I grow mine in a wire mesh compost barrel adding a bit of dirt and grass clippings as the vines grow. As the vine grows upward adding more dirt and cover will allow the vine to sprout more roots and grow more taters. You can get a lot of taters just from one vine done this way.
Love me sum of them red new taters and snapped green beans seasoned with a chunk of fatback.
