I built this trough 10 years ago and upgraded the reservoir in June, headed back in September to put a water catchment on it.

I have had good luck with two, 275 gallon totes feeding a 100-gallon plastic tank with a float below them, under full shade from a live oak to limit evaporation. I pile large rocks on one side as a ramp to get critters out and weigh down the tank when empty. Has worked well for me.

Instead of small totes to drink out of, why not just put a 150 to 250 gallon water trough and just fill the trough when you visit?

Unless you go at least weekly during summer months evaporation loss will make the level drop too much for the deer to reach it to drink.

I use the one texssdr recommend but ...
            1. If you have Hogs around ..I had to cement mine into the ground
            2. Use metal for hoses .. rodents chewed through the plastic irrigation pipe..

I had to hog/coon proof my guzzlers. The tire sits in a pen, so no hogs.

Coachwhip, I still remember the old thread on your snazzy little water trough... still waiting on an instructional thread on those or for you to build some to sell! Watched your update video just now. When you say the gophers got after your poly pipe, are we talking like SDR11 stuff or was it lightweight irrigation tubing type of poly? And what size? Not wanting to learn my lessons the hard way if you've already done it for us.

That lick tub will be fine if you can keep a float on it.... ie top edge where it can't be pulled off. I bought my initial trough from Tractor Supply that is made from similar material as the lick buckets. It has been solid since 2014. I have that and the 1/4 cut 50 gallon above and no issues for 10 years.

Not BS at all. Every protein mfg. States on the bag to feed ‘close to’ a water supply. Deer eating protein need water.
