Drew there a few times, wasn't impressed by the folks working in their forestry dept once drawn, very anti-hunting. Once NR draw quota went to 6% started looking around elsewhere and when they started requiring you pay for tags up front and wait months for a refund and no refund on the license my draw money went elsewhere.

I have just as much chance as any one else in my pool to draw. If I don't draw, I can buy a land owner tag for ranch only or a unit wide tag...if you are willing to spend the money.
I think it's much better than Colorado's way over crowded OTC or having to never catch up in preference points on primo unit.
I drew a Gila tag just last year...so it can happen.

That second part of the research is even more fun

Both of these quotes are accurate. I find it humorous that guy are so lazy when it comes to the draw and plan. "What unit do I hunt, any tips not spots?" Do the research, listen to pod cast, these guys that do it for a living give away valuable information with picking a unit and planning a hunt.
If you don't enjoy the game of odds vs value to pick a hunt you're in trouble when it comes to hunt planning. Pointing to a spot on a map and showing up could work out, but you could be staring steep mountains or mesa walls with no way to access your "hunt area". NM mountains aren't as big a CO mountains but they will humble you equally.
Also if your concerned about the money wait till the last week to apply. There's no reward for applying early just lets them hold your money for longer.Last edited by CrownKiller14; 02-01-2023, 10:21 AM.

Absolutely right. They can be tough, but I like the fact that atleast in the Linlcon / Gila / Cibola....they aren't near at tall. (In general)
You aren't gonna find elk 1000 ft above you and then them move up another 1000ft like say Colorado.
Still doesn't mean that are reachable at all however.
