Corn back to Protein, is now the time?

How many are feeding free choice Protein now that Deer Season is in the books(except for MLD Properties)? I have Protein available now on my place in East Texas but they are not hitting it yet. But they are still hammering my Food Plot. What is happening in your area?

I guess it depends on your deer. We usually start on February 1st. You can't make them eat anything they don't want trust me. I'm happy there still eating grass

I also restart in February. Them not “hitting it yet” is not a bad thing. They may not need it yet where you’re hunting. Food plots and natural vegetation is keeping them going still. The deer will eventually come back to it.

They hammered mine during the freeze before Christmas. They have been steady back on it since then. They had been non existent before that.

When I see a physical difference in our deer (lost weight, ragged from the rut), I start adding more protein to the mix. I never feed "straight protein" as our biologist recommends mixing with corn. I just mix more protein into the ratio when they need it.

Not free choice but timed protein here. The deer are eating it and the little bit of corn we throw in the off-season. Turkeys are eating at the protein troughs as well…. If we get some big spring rains and some green uu they will slow down on the protein. Until then its mowed down.

            San Angelo area.

East Texas as well. I feed both corn and protein year round with free choice at both of my feed pens. Deer have been consuming more corn than protein for several months but I expect that to change in a few months if not sooner. Keep the protein available and they will come.

I may not feed protein this year after the ungrateful sons of does didnt eat corn all year. They can mow down the food plots and eat acorns.

I'll start ours up this weekend. I know it helps the deer on our place.

Always start early December. Help them refuel after Ruth and get them through the cold months.

Imo if you got the cabbage, protein and cotton seed should be 24/365 , post rut , gestation,
                          Fawning, bone and horn growth

Hill country. We fill everything the last weekend of the season. With the late summer/early fall rain, we had an acorn crop and big green up. In normal years we let the protein and CS empty for hunting season.

This year though, they slacked off the feed big time during the green up, so we pretty much had it out all year. They really came back to CS mid-December. Filled everything within the last few weeks and deer are hammering protein and CS right now. Have mature bucks in the pens eating all night.

Same on our east Texas place, I filled protein about a month ago and it still isn't empty. They grab a nibble every now and then but are still showing up mainly for the corn. The coons on the other hand seem to really be looking for a nutrition bump already!!!!
