    Third rut?

Interesting year this year. Horns are way down but body sizes are up. Must be nutrition timing. What is also interesting is we are having mature deer still chasing up on my place in Fannin. Timing is right, about 60 days after the first rut.

This dude has been fighting, cruising and apparently hits the gym in between.

Keep in mind that early born fawns can come into estrus this time of year so some bucks are ready.

I live in Harrison county inside the city limits but in a neighborhood with a lot of deer around. About a week ago, i walked outside at 5 am to warm my truck up and saw an 8 pt cold trailing a doe in my neighbors yard

I had a buck dogging two does this morning in Red River Co, and all of the scrapes are active. The buck I shot Friday was rutted up, hocks blackened to his hooves and he was chasing before I shot him.

I see a third rut in Grayson County mid January at my lease and Hagerman NWR.

Rut in Newton has been a prolonged thing all season. Was not pronounced in Nov as in years past.

A buck is ready to breed as long as he has hard antlers. The does determine the breeding time and like Gumbo said, when doe fawns reach a certain weight, not age, but weight, then they are ready to breed. Bucks are kinda like teenage boys and young men……

Around here we no longer have a pronounced rut, you can find buck chasing from Oct - Jan or Feb and the fawn births confirm this long window.

Ours never starts and never ends during the season anymore.

The bucks in new Braunfels are chasing from September to February

Seems like if they’re hard horned, then they’re chasing
