    MLD question?

    Just being curious.
After reading up on the requirements of becoming a Level 3 MLD place. With me not being the land owner but lets say I would be the land manager. How difficult is it to acquire L3 status on a place that has never been mld?
    What are the costs?
    Is there a minimum size?
Any other thoughts, ideas or issues that folks have learned about becoming new mld places would be welcomed.

Depends on which option you chose

If I were you, I would reach out to your local biologist to discuss. Keep in mind why you are wanting MLD3 status when you discuss so they put on on the right track.

The Managed Lands Deer Program (MLDP) is intended to foster and support sound management and stewardship of native wildlife and wildlife habitats on private lands in Texas.

I know what you are referring to, but there is no Level 1, 2, or 3 any more. Now there is the Harvest Option and the Conservation Option, the latter of which is most similar to the old Level 3.

It is not difficult to get in, but there some steps involved. Conservation Option requires a management plan and 2 years each of prior harvest data and habitat management practices to be eligible. Once in CO, you are required to do annual surveys, report annual harvest data, and conduct 3 habitat management practices annually. You must get both buck and doe tags and harvest cannot exceed the number of tags issued (use of hunting license tags is illegal).

Once the landowner approves you as an agent, they no longer have to be involved and you can handle everything. No cost an no minimum acreage, but if you have a very small property, you won't get many tags and remember that you cant use license tags.

Actually, there is the new $300 tax they forced on us.

I didn't realize the Harvest Option came with the longer season. Is that somewhat new?

                Good stuff?

My concern would be the number of tags. Do they still do a survey at night of deer to determine the number of tags you receive? Does the number of tags have anything to do with the amount of acerage?

Our biologist is pretty good and gets our input after the survey. We talk about camera traffic and what we are seeing in terms of fawns.

I think the most deer we have ever seen during a spotlight survey on our place was 2 or 3. It is a joke in most of E Texas.

We still get darn near unlimited tags.

That's the kind of info I needed to know. Our place is weird. On our 600 acre side I bet we don't have one deer that lives there. One of the last sits at a feeder there. I saw 35-40 deer.

Our 1600 acre side is much the same way. I would say there might be 20-30 deer that live there. Like yall we should get unlimited tags.

Really and truthfully it is unmanageable with a 530 000 acre neighbor. It's 40-45 miles from our fence across their place. They have only recently started hunting. All of the hunting is 25 miles as the crow flies from us. Before that it was never hunted.
