    Muzzleloader kits

Have any of y’all built one? If so what type and how was your outcome?

I never have done it but have a buddy do one of the traditional percussion cap style. His ended up looking pretty nice and was surprisingly accurate.

I’ve been looking at those kits in catalogs for the past 30yrs thinking I’d always like to make one. Maybe one of these days.

I ordered from Jedediah Starr and was extremely impressed with it. I went with the Kentucky 50 flintlock and the options were almost limitless. I decided to do everything myself and had I to do it over I would have had them cut the dovetails into the barrel. Right now kits are pretty slim pickings…good luck and enjoy it!

I have done two rifles and a pistol. Not too bad to do, drilling the holes for the barrel tenons will take some measuring and layout work.

Plum brown or Rust bluing looks much better than cold blue. Oil finish with medium walnut stain looks better than polyurethane and maple finish.

Dang Hunter! 30 years? Your burning daylight son! Drop a detailed hint to your betrothed and see what you end up with. Hopefully it will come in the exact time she wants to go to the beach!

You just answered two of my questions. I was thinking that brown would look better than blue myself and that polyurethane would look kinda cheesy as well.

Friend of mine built a Hawken for a trip to NM several years ago and it turned out good and accurate

That’s my gun of choice. A left handed kit.

                        built a couple.

the lyman great plains kit(someone else sells it now) was all screwed up.
i had to scrape, claw, and remove a bunch of wood near the tang/breech to get the barrel to fit.

working on a 36 squirrel rifle for a while now..from a square block of maple and various parts. it's taking a while. i think i've removed more wood than what's left.

sure enough kits, aren't REAL hard...most of the time.

Dang Drifter. That’s a lot of wood!

I built four or five rifles and pistols about 40 years ago. All of them were lost in a house fire about 15 years ago.

One Hawken .45 caliber could hit a 2” circle at 100 with open sights with a patched ball…. back when I could see.

One kit was a .68 caliber flintlock pistol. A Revolutionary War era replica…. No sights. That was awesome to shoot.

I went with a 50 flintlock. I do have a 45 flintlock that weighs a couple lbs less and is more than suitable for any game here in Texas.
