Best hunting App for western hunts

Ok I have had a single state subscription to OnX for a couple of years but will be starting my e-scouting for a Colorado elk hunt and looking into the various services before I upgrade my OnX

So I what says the green screen
    OnX
    Basemap
    GoHunt

What does everyone prefer and why? What do you like and dislike?

I’ll take a stab. Understand, I’ve only used OnX in full disclosure. Likes: for where I hunt, updates are pretty good. I know where I am and can plan ahead. Offline downloads are a must! Dislikes: weather updates are iffy for me. It is an app that uses data. If you are where you want to be, you won’t have it. Again, plan ahead and download. Hope that helps. Good luck.

I've been running Huntstand for many years now. Im actually mapping out a few units in CO right now lol. Fairly easy to navigate. Havent had any issues on my end.

I've heard gaia is great but I've also heard it sucks. I haven't used it other than a free trial basic use. IMO it was a cross between google maps and onx. Gohunt, they have features I like but from what I've heard their mobile app is atrocious. Huntstand and basemap I've looked into but never tried, nothing of theirs caught my attention.

I have the unlimited membership of onx because I have used it all over the US and have pins all over for various things. There are things that I wish onx could do that some of the other map services can but overall IMO the useful capabilities for hunting and fishing are more abundant than the others. As far as reliability, the majority of my hunting and fishing is in places with ZERO cell service so I mainly use it for the downloaded maps on my phone for in the field and then e-scouting on my laptop at home. As far as accuracy, I haven't had any issues. Some imaging is old and outdated for where I use it but that isn't exactly an onx issue.

I have had one bad run with onx though. Was on a 15 day hunt/trip and it would never load or even accurately locate where I was. I don't know if it was my phone or the app. Luckily I knew the area from scouring maps for months. If I didn't know the area from looking at maps so much it could have been a really serious situation. Other than this one time I haven't ever had any issues.

As far as weather updates, the only thing I trust is my SatCom as it will always give the most up-to-date and accurate info.

I have used GOHUNT and OnX. OnX d is just mapping. GOHUNT offers a wider variety of products and services, and, in my opinion, better value. OnX mapping platform is better (again...IMO), but they have been doing it a lot longer than GOHUNT. I think in the next few builds, GOHUNT will have all the kinks worked out.

I had OnX up until last season, and had no real problems. Last season I switched to gohunt because if you have service, it was awesome. However, if you download maps, it is garbage. GoHunt does not have a hybrid map, which is incredibly useful in elk country. Gohunt has a topo map, but its like looking at a photo, as opposed to OnX, which is an image which clarifies itself as you zoom, and changes the topo line gaps as you zoom in and out. On Gohunt, looking at the topo was basically useless.

Add to this, I had issues with Gohunt maps deleting themselves, or failing to download, and when talking with customer service, never having it resolved. After our hunt this year, I contacted them, asking if they wanted feedback. They said absolutely. But once they saw my detailed list and ways to fix them, they just gave me a run-around.

Gohunt is an awesome scouting tool. I love it for that purpose, and the reason I still pay for it. But I couldn't rely on it, like I could OnX.

I will be switching back to OnX for this year.

I have used Gaia for the past 6 years in Colorado, Wyoming , Arizona, Montana and Idaho. It has never let me down. Lots of base layers in addition to the topo and satellite
