    Drew garner state park youth

We just got back from the garner youth state park hunt. Everyone was friendly, gorgeous drive and place. We where set up on a spot that looked good from the start, scent free, as we are bow hunters, even took our ozonics. Didn’t have a great wind the entire time, but never got blown, also didn’t see a thing, during hunting hours. 20 groups, only shot 3 axis and 2 white tail and one hog. This was supposed to be one of the best hunts of the state parks. I was very disappointed. Still worth the drive just for the scenery. We stayed at 4js, which is across the street from garner, and is a very clean, quiet place. We did take our fishing stuff, but only caught a few brim, small bass, as the river is very low right now. I don’t know if they set this up wrong, we didn’t seem to be on any game trails that I could see, or in any area they would be attracted too. No signs of them in that area for long periods feeding. No poop. Did hear the axis bugling on both sides of us at times.

Could have been the moon phase. I hunted with my grandson the last 2 days and saw 5 does yesterday at dark 30. Usually have those 5 and 2 small bucks daily at the feeder

This is the consensus it seems for those who have posted over the last couple years. I have been watching as I have almost 20 points saved up for exotic.

When I hunted there , many years ago... they were not thrilled to have a hunt(management). But the regular folks liked it cause it meant A LOT LESS stress and drama that a weekend of folks caused.

It was a very strict hunt. Shoot in specific directions from a specific blind etc... The axis are wise to the hunters/traffic.

Was a good place, many years ago. Not so much now.

That is a lot of points. Personnaly, I would not put in for Garner.

You haven’t been paying attention to TBH. That place is hunted out. Don’t waste your time with it again. It wasn’t the wind, the moon, or anything else. The animals aren’t there anymore.

I haven’t. Powderhorn for the time being, but I am sure it will be going down hill soon. One thing TPWD doesn’t like on their lands, it is exotics.

My understanding is TPWD paid professional shooters to harvest the axis the public would love to hunt. Bureaucracy at its best! My daughter drew that hunt the year after, I heard the reports leading up to the hunt and decided to hunt on some private ground.

Yep, I heard this, of course after our hunt!! If they reallY want you to shoot anything, don’t limit the hunt, permit says unlimited, then we where told only 3, I’ve been on a lot of drawn hunts And I hate they change the rules once you get there. Of course we didn’t see anything.

I went. Only hunt I’ve drawn. It sucked. I did shoot a young axis buck. Hardly anyone else killed or saw any. It’s shot out. Bad. They fully admit they are wanting the axis wiped out.

We hunted it around 2006. TONS of animals. Three of us came home with 4 axis and 3 white tail does and could have shot more.

We also spent a week in the summer there every year for 5 or 6 years after. In the afternoons you could drive the park and see axis and turkey all over the place. WT galore. Went this past summer and didn't see a single critter in the park

My cousin and I were there the same time Trophy 8 was there. Only saw one turkey from the blind during the hunt. Did see about twenty axis on the south end of the park while picking up hunters one night. I think there were only three axis and a hog killed that hunt.

I’ve noticed several threads lately about the hunt quality going downhill on the TPWD property. I guess it’s a good thing most of the state is privately owned and managed.
