For those that are running the "Houston" (Cat Springs) race, how is your training coming along?

I'm in good shape for the running part, but have recently added more weight lifting. I need to build my upper-body strength up a little more. I also need to start practicing the obstacles that I struggle with, like the spear throw.

I had a little setback with some bicep strains. Completely avoiding preacher curls and backed off weight for any pulling motions Running/jogging feels pretty good. Between now and race am focusing good bit on hanging type exercises. My big challenge is bringing down body weight. Even 10lbs makes a huge difference on many the obstacles.

Mark me down as interested; living out in Hell Rio (3 hours from civilization) I don’t know of any place near by that might have obstacles to practice on.

How do you folks train for the actual race/obstacles aside from obviously getting as fit as possible?

It doesn't seem like a lot but doing body weight hangs is really helpful. Find a time you can reasonably hang and then try to add longer increments each week. Many the obstacles are body weight hanging. Keep an eye out at playgrounds too for monkey bars. If you haven't done one before look on Spartans website or youtube some videos that show the different obstacles. Other than spear throw and rope climb, most obstacles break down to climbing, carrying, hanging and crawling.

OleTomTalker, sorry to hear about the bicep strains. As I get older, staying injury-free during training becomes more of a challenge.

I completely agree on the body weight comment. I need to clean up my eating, especially cutting back on desserts, between now and the race. I'm carrying a few extra pounds around that just make the body-weight obstacles more difficult.

Pedernal, I've started setting up some simple obstacles at home. This isn't practical for everyone, but I hung a climbing rope from the ceiling of the shop. I also made my own Spartan spear, using the instructions that are available online. I use a cardboard box full of bubble wrap as my target. I haven't found any good monkey bars nearby, but I have an old extension ladder that can be set up for practice purposes.
