    Cyber Attack

Dang, there's some ruthless people out there. My employer (a local college) has been hit by a "targeted cyber attack." All our IT division is putting out is that it doesn't seem to have compromised any personal or vendor info. No telling us what happened or how long until we will be back to normal. This has been a tough time because it has affected a lot of pay and has the potential to continue to do so.

Any of y'all ever go through something like this? What happened? How long did it take to straighten out?

Call me crazy and a conspiracy theorist but I'm afraid this is about to be WAY MORE common than usual. Lots of folks have too much time on their hands with ill intentions nowadays.

One of my vendors got hit with something like this a month or so ago. They were dead in the water for about a week. Once they came back online they could only do quotes, not enter orders. I bet it was 2 1/2 or 3 weeks before they were back to business as usual.

A few years ago the company I work for got hit with a ransomware attack. The lowlife scum locked up the servers and demanded payment. IT ended up having to wipe everything and copy from the backup. Entire company lost a week of work. Took us quite a while to catch up on projects because of it. Some folks just need a good beheading.

I'm a commercial insurance agent and sell quite a bit of cyber insurance. From what I've seen, it could be weeks before you're operating at 100% again. Hopefully, being that you work for a college they have cyber insurance. If so, there should be specialist that your IT Dept is working with to resolve the issue. Cyber events are very costly.

A couple years ago my wife's company. (Huge Software Company) got hit with a Ransomware attack they were shut down for a week or two and told not to even get on their computers. The feds came in, can't remember if it was CIA, FBI, ect. and they spent millions on IT experts to address the situation, I believe they ended up having to pay an unknown amount to the hackers to get their data back.

              Who would benefit from that?

                Low life scum hackers

I would pay someone like that to attack spammers though

My company is one of the largest Cybersecurity companies in Texas. We see this all the time. Doesn’t matter how big or how small you are - they are after you. We combine managed detection and response along with remediation services. If setup correctly, we are averaging 20-30 clock hours to have someone completely back up and running. If not subscribed to the full suite of services we see 10 days minimum to be back up. Cyber insurance is getting smart and declining coverage if you don’t check all their boxes. The next year of insurance renewals will be outrageous in prerequisites and cost. We restored a 200 user company last year and it was $950k. Insurance paid their $500k max and the client paid tbe balance.

This is why I switched from OEM hardware to top Identity and Access management company. Crazy busy business.

I really hope our IT has cyber insurance. I don't think they do, but dang, I hope I'm wrong!

Thanks guys, there's been a lot of eye-opening info put out so far.

Happened to my company as well...just before COVID shut everything down. It was a mess and took quite a bit of time to get functional again.

It’s not just businesses either. I get a couple emails a day from someone phishing for personal info. Even get a few that say they’ve hacked my computer and demand bitcoin or they will alert family and friends to my **** addiction. I’m always tempted to say take your best shot but I know the best thing to do is just delete and ignore. It gets aggravating but I guess that’s the world we live in.

I have a friend who was CEO for a hospital in Mississippi. His facility got hit and the hackers tired to get them to give up half a million to unlock their system. They negotiated and agreed on $50,000. They gave the hacker the money with blind faith and only hope that they would hold up to their end of the deal and unlock them. It worked, luckily the hacker held up but they were out $50k. The hacker never was located or charged. Probably overseas.
