Last weekend, I met up with some buddies to hunt out in the Llano/Cherokee area. I've been playing guide most of this season so I really haven't hunted but once or twice for myself. Friday evening found me set up in a well hidden pop-up blind overlooking a feeder. With the warm temps and south wind, it was a very slow hunt with me only seeing a couple of young WT does. I decided to change locations and get away from feeders Saturday morning by hunting an elevated stand near a fork in the road leading up to a feed area. We hand corned the area the night before and I had a few does out right at daybreak. I played cat & mouse with a nice 11pt WT buck but never got a shot on him
. Man? Close ...but no cigar.
Eager to get back out, I went back to the same stand around 3ish in hopes of seeing the buck again. He never showed so I was content with "doe watching" when I saw movement in the brush and a young fallow deer came out to the corn. Looking further down the road, I could see another deer coming through the brush and out stepped a very nice Fallow buck! As he made his way to the hand corn to feed, my heart was racing so I needed to calm down before trying to take him. Once I relaxed, I grabbed the trusty Heli-M, set the pin and sent the arrow through him. It all happened so quick, I honestly thought I had missed him. He did the jump/kick/run manuever so I felt better when I saw the arrow buried in the ground. I waited about 30 minutes before starting the recovery and started seeing good blood about 20yds from the shot. I followed the blood trail into the brush and found a Spotted Fallow buck piled up against a big cedar bush. I said my celebratory prayer and was thankful that it had all come together.
