congrats on them coming up. My seed mix had some Maximillian sunflowers in it but I don't think many, if any, came up. Although I had groves of wild ones come up.

That's encouraging Matt!! Ours went in last week. Hoping to see similar results.

Hope so too. I’m guessing the freezer trick worked.

Nice! Glad to see that technique worked. Keep us posted on the progress.

I was at Turner seed last Fri asking about planting sunflowers. He told me I could still plant natives ,but had to be quick & they may not make good. Recommended if I wanted to try ,just do part of the field & come back with in other part next month in hybrids. Also asked about the freezing part. He told me just cold weather, that freezing wouldn't be necessary.
Just relaying what they told me. Since the field was wet, I decided to just do hybrids this year. Asked about the best way to spread the little native seeds. He recommended either spreading with wheat or organic fertilizer that would be cheaper than wheat. He did say wheat would give you a ground cover & probably pull some deer in. At this point my plan is to use wheat & plant next early November.

Good Luck to all this growing season. Pray for rain!!

That looks very promising. I had deer eat all the fresh growth when I tried to plant sunflowers. I did manage to grab 400 lbs of different sunflower seeds at tractor supply last month, will try another plot next year. Keep the progress of your dove plot coming.

Are hybrids cheaper? I mixed mine with fertilizer.

Quite a bit cheaper ,but you have to replant every year. I planted some hybrids last year after they grubbed the mesquites out & made my field. Didn't have a disk so some areas weren't disturbed. Where it was they hybrids came up ,but then the drought pretty well killed everything. Bought a disk & got the field prepped good. I just didn't take the time off from duck hunting to get the natives in this season. All my fault.

Mine are growing but not very fast. Maybe 10-15” tall.

Picture from a few weeks ago.
