    Deer in S. San Antonio?

    Hello GS,

Anyone live just south of San Antonio? Are there deer in that area (pic for reference)? Decent bucks in the suburbs?

Deer in the area? absolutely....Decent?....guess that depends on your definition. I've haven't heard of anything of relevance coming out of this area in a while. Great area for meat hunting though!

There are deer in that area, and a few decent ones I am pretty sure. But pretty tough hunting for the decent ones around there. My Dad hunted there about 15 years ago. It was just a place to be able to get out and hunt a little close to town, turkeys primarily. He actually saw a couple decent bucks, but it was tough hunting between neighbors, dogs etc.

The closer you get to i35, the better they will be. Lots and lots of new development plus a lot of current houses in that circle so animals are being pushed out bigtime. More raw land west of highway 16. I’ve seen some good deer dead along 16.

              Hollywood Park is better.

I live on the eastern edge of that circle. The bucks around here are really decent, but most have narrow racks. Seen quit a few dead recently off of highway 181.

I live on the eastside of SA, and I would pay big money to have a deer lease in or around the live oak or seguin area

Yes great bucks in there. They are some of the smartest deer there is though. I’m getting a lot of photos of bucks on camera there. I hunt every week (bow only and for hogs mostly). I have never seen any of these deer in person. The ones that come in daylight are never around when I’m there.

Some big boys in the sandy oaks area I know a few TBHrs out there that have killed some big ones on small tracts of land.

Before Toyota, and all the growth, there were some big deer in some spots around that area. Then some areas you will be lucky to find a deer.

Most anywhere along the San Antonio River, should have some good to very good hunting. Farther west towards 35, for a ways one either side of 1604, there is not much in that area. Once you get to the other side of 35 and 1604, south and west from there, used to be some very good hunting. But I have not been in that area since Toyota built the plant.

Somerset is probably the most desolate/lacking game in the area. Over around 37, on either side, if you are on the right piece of property, there can be some very good hunting, but if you are on the wrong piece, you will be lucky to find a deer. I have known quite a few people who used to own land down in that area you are asking about. I been through the area a lot 15 plus years ago. The closest I have ever hunted to that area, was down around Devine. I only saw one buck, but it was about 17" to 18" heavy rack, around 14 point buck, with some tall tines.

Don't sign any contracts till you have thoroughly looked the place over.

Draw that circle just a little further East and there’s really good deer. And a healthy population of them.
