Angle grinder with a wire brush wheel works pretty good.

Acid etching primer, high temp paint worked on one I redid a while back.

Wire brush and then Ospho. Leaves paint ready surface.

Wire brush in any form needed and then hi temp paint like mentioned above. Have done a handful. Simple process.

Take it somewhere to have it sandblasted. Oh, and may be evident, but don’t paint inside.

Any paint you put on will burn off and rust again anyway. Maybe just cook away and wipe it with BBQ grease from the pit after it cools and season it like a cast iron skillet.

I never would have guessed this would work. But a buddy of mine, who is building a custom 64 F100, blasted his truck this way. I was shocked how well it worked.

I have heard of guys that were blasting vehicles with water and abrasives 10+ years ago. I was told the water was to keep the dust down. They supposedly put something in the water to keep the metal from rusting after being blasted. I thought about getting someone to blast a truck for me, but have not gotten to the point of needing to blast the truck yet. Then a year ago, I saw the work my buddy did on his truck, I was very impressed with how well it worked.

I think the water also keeps the surface cool and keeps thin metal like body panels from warping.
