In the interest of educating and reminding people about safety while outdoors, can someone elaborate on what happened, without going into to much personal detail?
Make sure your guns are unloaded before going into a house.

I worked with Mr Pfiel and his son who is also a peace officer for many years. Great people, and I cannot imagine the heartache they are going through. Terrible accident that I am certain will be difficult to get over. Mr Pfiel was a jovial guy who was great to be around and a wonderful person in general.

Almost every time the term accidental discharge is brought up in this forum, a line of members can’t wait to say, “It is negligent discharge, not accidental”.

So it negligently killing a person a crime? Yep, it’s a felony.

So this beloved officer appears to be killed with negligence and there is no autopsy and at least by initial reports, no investigation other than to say, it was a terrible accident, let’s move on.

I wonder if all accidental deaths are handled in such a fashion.

The Armed Forces no longer use the term "accidental discharge". All are now classified as "negligent". I guess it's because someone had control of the weapon system and failed to control it properly.

Could be a minor involved in which case I would agree with the cloak.

Only thing that makes any sense but still a real sad situation.

From what I heard from a friend of the family. Another family member was loading a rifle before heading into the field to hunt. The gun went off and passed through a few walls and killed the victim while the victim was taking a nap.

                        I can see that happening.
                        So sad.

The fact that we are relying on others in camp to handle their weapon properly is scary stuff if you consider "deer season" is the one time a year some of these folks ever handle a gun. This smells of a blind mag rifle being loaded from the top then bolt cycled to complete the task.

It's like a parent not having a kid in a seat belt and having a car accident. The kid dies. Was the parent guilty of a crime? Yes. But charges are seldom filed.

It sucks all the way around. I had a REM 700 that did it to me one time. It scared the poo out of me and blew a hole in the blind.

Really sad if it was actually a family member. This was recent to. Complete accident as it seems

Ozgur Gevrekoglu, 32, was about to return from weekend of hunting on the Kizlan Plateau, in the Alacam District of Turkey's Samsun province, when the tragic incident unfolded yesterday
