    Questions about TAC setup

This coming up year I plan on getting into and attending some TAC events as well as maybe some indoor 3D events. My question about a TAC setup is due to me wanting a TAC 3D dedicated Bow (But still have it available as a backup hunting bow if something unexpectedly happens)

    1. When it comes to weight, I hunt maxed out on weight and was wondering if in TAC I could drop down to something way more polite at maybe 60-65lbs and not be totally thrown off and if that low of a weight still could handle the longer 100+ yard shots respectively

    2. Are there certain arrow (spine/weight) setups that are better for this type of shooting

    3. Since there is alot of walking and trails is a smaller lighter bow better then a longer heavier bow (even though the longer heavier tend to be more accurate)

    4. Any other advice or experience that yall may have when looking to have a dedicated TAC setup

    Thanks

What is a Tac setup? lol

Thats dumb shoot the bow you would hunt with. Thats the whole point of Tac.
That whole Tac bow is Dudley and all the other retailers trying to sell more stuff.

      This.

The courses are set up to be similar to hunting scenarios. It’s great practice if you’re ever planning on spot and stalk type hunting.

If competing in 3D, then absolutely run a dedicated 3D rig.. but for TAC, try to mimic your hunting setup as much as possible.

My dumb TAC setup is just my hunting bow shooting arrows that are about 100 grains lighter, and two or three dollars a piece less expensive… I can get a little more distance out of my sight tape, and it doesn’t hurt quite as bad if I lose a few. I shot my hunting setup for several years, I just done feel the need anymore. Go enjoy, they are great events.

By TAC setup I mean a Bow that I can have setup for 90-100yrd shots which I would never shoot with my hunting bow in a real scenario and my hunting rig doesnt even have a sight setup for that distance because of that reason. I also shoot a short ATA with hardly any stabilizers due to me ground blind hunting. TAC will allow a bigger bow and longer stabilizers etc due to the open/stalk setup
I also dont feel like pulling my 80lb bow back hundreds of times in a single day or weekend while I backpack or hike a few miles

So I dont see why having multiple bows for different scenarios or events is dumb?.?

TAC was setup originally for replicating hunting out West... Muley, Elk, etc. With that people just took their hunting bows they used for this.

Over the years it's gotten a bigger following and some of the bigger names started pitching "TAC" setups. So, the event almost has a cult like following now. Some people travel around and attend a lot of them.

I think if you are going to hit up a lot of these events, like some do on say ASA archery then it might warrant an alternate setup depending on your current hunting setup. This is pretty common in ASA.

It sounds like you are probably doing something like this and may have a more "Texas" setup for hunting... High poundage, heavy arrows, short ATA, etc.

No clue what you are shooting right now, but I am a fan of 33-35" ATA bows. I wouldn't do a short ATA for TAC, but that is just me. You aren't going to tell the difference in say 1/2 a pound hiking around. I would also play with a front and back stabilizer. You will be surprised how much those help and they really don't get in the way of ground blind hunting.

You can definitely go down on poundage and use lighter arrows to get the distance you are talking about.

All that said, I would try replicate the TAC setup with your hunting setup... as close as possible.
For myself, what I use for elk/muley hunting is what I use for hunting in Texas. So, I just take that setup to TAC.
